I fell in love with the macabre in 1982. It was Halloween and I was in a Casper the Friendly Ghost costume. It was one of those vinyl coveralls deals with a hard plastic mask. I was uncomfortably hot in it all night but refused to take it off. Thanks to John Carpenter’s Halloween 2, my mother was convinced every chocolate bar concealed a razor blade, so she twisted them up to verify. I declared that the mutilated candy looked like turds and refused to eat them. It was the best night of my life so far. Forty years later I remember that feeling, the marriage of dread and excitement that bubbled in my stomach as the sun descended and the sky glowed blood orange. At dusk I retire to my garage and slump over a keyboard. I desperately try to capture that sensation, so it can be shared with all who dare to read my stories. R.C. Hausen is the author of Cosmovorous, a cosmic horror novel that combines the tough as nails female protagonist of stories like “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and “Alien” with the other worldly terrors of “The Thing” and “Phantasm”. He lives in Round Rock, TX with his wife and their three children. When he’s not writing, he’s either lifting weights, pondering the cold nature of the cosmos, or imagining the ineffable terrors that roam in the nothing that is everything.
