His voice well-known to millions of California radio listeners, Stan Bunger’s career spanned more than 40 years of ratings success and industry awards. Bunger is best known for anchoring the KCBS Morning Newswatch, the highest-rated program on the all-news powerhouse station in San Francisco. His career included stops at small-town stations in Northern California, time on legendary Dallas station KRLD, and several years as co-host and senior producer of the internationally-distributed technology television program “Next Step”. When Bunger retired in 2021, widespread media coverage included testimonials from broadcast industry legends such as multiple Emmy Award-winning radio and TV reporter Mike Sugerman: “He can make the bad times sound not so bad,” said Sugerman. “In this time of disbelieving the media, you don’t disbelieve Stan Bunger. He’s so down-to-earth. It’s like he’s just talking to you. That’s a skill that’s hard to pull off. He does it.” (Rubenstein, Steve. “Bay Area Radio Anchor Stan Bunger to Sign off After 4 Decades Behind Microphone”, San Francisco Chronicle, 7 June 2021) Bunger was born in San Francisco and raised in San José, at a time when the Silicon Valley was still full of prune and apricot trees. He’s called the island city of Alameda, California home since 1988. He can often be found at Alameda’s renowned public golf complex, where his game remains very much a work in progress. Bunger is a proud alumnus of West Valley College (A.A. in Social Sciences, 1975) and San Francisco State University (B.A. in Broadcast Communication Arts, 1977). His honors include induction to the San Francisco State University Alumni Hall of Fame and the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame. The son and grandson of football coaches, Bunger is a lifelong sports fan who is still amazed that the San Francisco Giants actually won the World Series in his lifetime—and then did it twice more.
