I am a retired US Navy officer and the son of Rear Admiral John Blitch, USN (ret.). After retiring from the navy, I founded and currently own and operate Magellan Christian Academies, faith-based early childhood education centers. I met my wife while on active duty in Pensacola, Florida. I am the father of three children and five grandchildren. I reside with my wife in Jacksonville Beach, Florida. I authored Pop's Place: Some Things Are Meant To Be, a historical romance fiction based in part on the fascinating true-life stories of my father and the Blitch Family in South Carolina. I originally wanted to write about my father's and my family's life experiences as a non-fiction. My greatgrandfather, Norman H. Blitch, began life as a dirt-poor illiterate farmer in rural Effingham County, Georgia, outside Savannah. He met his wife who taught him to read and write and they moved to the Charleston, South Carolina area. What prompted their move I have yet to uncover. Working hard and using his keen intellect and ingenuity, he rose to become the most prolific planter of the big cash crop at the time, cabbage. He owned vast acreages of farmland, shipped his produce and seedlings all over the country, and even built crate and barrel and packaging factories to service his farms. His was a true life rags-to-riches story. He had newspaper and book articles written about him and was in Who's Who of South Carolina. My father, John, or "Jack" as he was nicknamed, was born at home in Charleston in 1914. He attended the Citadel, then received an appointment to the United States Naval Academy where he graduated in 1936. He earned his Wings of Gold in 1939 and saw his first combat action when he was on patrol and flew into Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941. He participated in and led dive-bomb attacks against the Imperial Navy in almost every battle of the Pacific Theater. Highly decorated, including the Navy Cross, he retired in 1959. I found writing the non-fiction to be uninspiring, so I converted the book to its present form, a historical romance fiction. All the critical events are presented as they actually happened with subplots and other characters thrown in to make the story flow and add human interest. It is a gripping and fascinating look at life and characters in post-war Low Country. I am currently adapting the story to a made-for-TV miniseries, audiobook, and stage play with music.
