John Anthony (Tony) Martin is a lifelong learner, a natural teacher, and an adventurer. One of his first jobs was in the snack shop of a local drive-in theater. When the projectionist suddenly quit mid-season, Tony jumped at the opportunity to be trained on the archaic and complicated machines. With no previous experience and a great deal of pressure to learn quickly, he persevered until he had mastered his new position. This passion to increase his knowledge base has been a constant throughout his career. While pursuing a journeyman certification through the Canadian Interprovincial Apprenticeship program, he observed his instructors and decided that he would someday become a teacher. Throughout his career, Tony has continued to pursue a wide variety of educational opportunities. His teaching dream became a reality in 1996 when he became the Heavy Duty Mechanics instructor at Ilisagvik College in Barrow, Alaska (now Utqiagvik). After five years, Tony went to the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau, eventually obtaining full professor status. He is currently employed as a trainer in private industry. He has also published many articles on a variety of technical topics and spoken at many conferences. Wherever he has been employed, he has generously shared his knowledge and experience. Tony loves seeing people fulfill their potential. When presented with the opportunity to spend a summer in Alaska fixing machinery and driving trucks at a fish packing plant, Tony packed up and headed north. That same summer, he met and quickly proposed to his wife of 25 years. This fearless sense of adventure has taken Tony and his family all over Alaska – from the Kenai Peninsula oil fields to the tundra of the North Slope, and from the rainforest of Southeast Alaska to its mountainous heart, Fairbanks. In his free time, he enjoys biking, hiking, and camping - especially when joined by his wife and some (or all) of their five children.
