Leaving my husband was hard. Trying to face the world alone with my teenage daughter is the sort of thing nightmares are made of, but I caught a break. My best friend just hired me for a great job, with perks like a rent-free house right beside not just one handsome man, but five! Each one is hotter than the last, and all of them seem interested in me. But everyone around us has these strange golden eyes...and there are the questions no one will answer. And who cares if there's a lot of wildlife running around at night? I do, especially when a wolf keeps sneaking into my backyard.

A little confusing at first, but good all around.

I got so confused at first, when the characters explained how relationships work in this, but once I got the hang of it, I found myself not only ok with the set up, I actually started really loving the characters. There are definitely some problematic themes if you're not into power struggles, and really just all around, but the author did a pretty great job of actually addressing most, if not all of them.
I am excited to start book 2!

Gabriel Braven is destined for a great love, but he does not believe it. His parents had a storybook romance… until a freak ocean storm robbed them of their lives and left him alone to be raised by his grandmother. With their deaths, Gabriel’s adoration for the sea turned to fear, and his belief in happy-ever-afters turned to dust. Gabriel vowed to never set foot in the ocean again and to never believe in love.

I'm sorry, I loved this book, I truly truly did, but I can't help but feel that it was a slight waste of a credit to spend on one so short. I can't afford to buy books on this app so I rely on the free books and my bonus credits to have something to listen to while I draw. So when I spend one of my precious credits, and the story doesn't even last me two very short drawing sessions, I wonder if it's really worth it. I had steeled myself into using my ceedits for the whole series, but sadly I don't think I will anymore. I need to keep a better eye on story length.
All this said, like I said, I am LOVING this story. I am subscribed to Raythe Reign on YouTube, and I think I will have to stick to that. Perhaps if I ever stop using Audible, I can just get her stories right from the source, her website, but for now I think I'll have to skip the rest of this series... which makes me really sad. I'll look through her other stuff to see if something else is longer. Too bad, I freaking love mermaids :(

Year One classes have begun in the enchanted halls of Blackbriar Academy, and they're more challenging than anything I've ever faced in my life. Surviving the Academy means brutal training, advanced magic, and a bloodthirsty student who is developing a dangerous hunger for my power. Worst of all, it's clear someone knows my secret. And they have my father locked away. Deep in the rubble of an ancient ruin, we find evidence of a ritual. One we don't fully understand, but one which most definitely involves me in some way.

I still love the characters but the problems I felt were in the first story carried through to this one. Unfortunately the sex scenes started to get repetitive and sometimes it wasn't clear who was talking. This was made more obvious with some parts being read in the qrong "voices".

Blackbriar Academy is an enchanted school on a magical island, and everyone wants in. It’s a home away from home for the most advanced mages in the world - and only the absolute best of the best are given an invitation. By some freak accident, I managed to get one. If I pass the trials, I get to stay. With nowhere else to go, Blackbriar is my one shot at having a real life, and I won’t let anyone take this from me. But there’s a catch. It turns out the people on this island are being trained to hunt the darkness - basically, they’re being trained to hunt me.

My score is a little odd, but here's why...
Évalué le: 2022-06-15
I loved this book. I love the characters so much and the author is AMAZING at writing the sex scenes. So many other novels I've read with multiple sex scenes get repetitive, and/or make me feel awkward with their word choices. This is a me problem, but that doesn't even matter because it's so well done I didn't have to feel that way.
The author is really good at writing fights too. Quite often when there is a battle in a book, I will tune out the battle and just get the jist until the outcome. The actual steps and punches are rarely important so it's not a particularly big deal my doing so. In some novels where the author was particularly bad at writing a fight scene, (not that the writing was bad, just that someone as I, who is more of a pacifist got bored of the over explained movements) I even found myself full on skipping to the outcome. Trials of Blackbriar Academy featured fights where I most often held onto every hit and flourish. I did not find myself getting bored and only really found myself zoning out when very tired. This is a huge plus in my book! Literally!
The reason I gave the story itself only 4 stars was because of the grammar in many parts, and some of the writing in general. Overall, the story is very good and extremely easy to get lost in. The writing is no Hemingway, but it is simplistic in the most positive way. It's easy to follow and even easier to get immersed in. The only things that pull the reader/listener from the world are that along with the second and last issue I had with this story: the world is not well explained.
I felt as though we had a very surface level explanation of the world within which this story has been set. I assume this is our current Earth, but with magic, but I am left to assume because it isn't really explained and we the consumer must take cues from the fact that they mention current North American cities. I do have to add that as a Canadian, the addition of Milo being Canadian really pleasantly surprised me! That said, I was disappointed in not knowing if the wizard world was hidden from humans in this book. We know some aspects of the world aren't common knowledge, but only really a couple of things; nothing else is explained. I also felt that the castle wasn't particularly well mapped either.
These two things that I do consider problems, are not a big enough deal for me to pull down the over all rating, but if considering the story on its own merits, I do feel they warrant ine fewer star. I did love this book and I want others to as well so I hope those who aren't likely to read my review and just judge it on the overall star rating will not be impacted at all by my negative criticism. I do mean for it as constructive criticism however as I am also an author and understand how valuable it can be.
At the end of the day, this is a good read/listen and if you like magic, hot guys, and badass women you'll love it.

Read awhile back, still remember I loved it!
Évalué le: 2022-06-09
Semi tl;dr near the middle-end... not particularly helpful though.
I don't remember all the story's details but I DO remember how much I loved it. I also remember that I absolutely can't wait for the next one and I keep coming back to see if it's yet available. If it takes too long I may just have to relisten. I had a really severe brain injury back in 2018 and although I am unhappy the lasting damage gave me terrible memory and stunted recollection, I am happy that it ONLY gave me a terrible memory and stunted recollection and that it means I don't have to wait as long to re-watch/re-listen/re-read all media I know I will want to consume multiple times! I also don't remember if I pre-ordered the next book already, so I am hoping I succeed in remembering to keep holding onto that one leftover credit I have sitting there in order to get it as soon as it comes out! I even thought another series was this one and excitedly started listening only to be lost (I didn't listen/read the first book in /that/ series) and sad when I realized it wasn't about the protag having grown up and was now a ghost, working at the morgue... Needless to say I was upset confused.
Anyway, if I, a 38 year old mother, who's kid is only a year or two off the protagonist's age, like the story enough to ramble about my past head trauma for a good 15 minutes, to an audience I don't only not know, but will never know if I do know; then you will like it too.
TL;DR
If you were ever the outcast at school, the spooky kid, and/or the one who always got picked last, you will love this book. It's something I feel will always be relatable so long as isolation exists and people think calling someone "weird" is an insult.
It isn't, by the way. Wear your weird like a badge of honour! It makes you unique and it makes you cool despite what all the sheep think. I mean I love sheep, they are just not as fun, hilarious, ridiculous, and wonderful as the fainting goats that fall over when you spook them, and like to climb trees. Ya know?
So if you're an amazing ridiculous fainting goat like me, you'll love this book. If you're not but are a quiet kid, you'll love this book. If you were the "creepy" kid, you'll love this book. If you read or listen to books, you'll probably like this book!
Just stop reading this and go listen to it!

At first, I was really disappointed to know that Esme was the human protagonist. In the previous book, she was not only least favourite character, I was genuinely angry with her. I'm a very logic minded person and so having someone who that felt like purposefully denied all logic spewing her misinformation frustrated me to absolutely no end.
Everything here on out is a spoiler. If you want to know if you should read this book, if you liked the previous in the collection, the answer is absolutely!
-| Spoilers past this mark |-
When I learned that Kai was to be one of Esme's mates, I was also pretty upset. Kai is my absolute favourite character in this entire series, except for possibly Bren and Jun, I'm going to say it's a 3-way tie... pun TOTALLY intended ;P
I really felt that Kai deserved SO much better, but as the story went on, I found myself quite enjoying that Kai had more influence on Esme than the other way around. I was quite glad to see that we would end up with two characters more like Kai, than any like Esme was before the proverbial stick was forcibly removed from her ass.
By the end, I don't know that I'd say I liked Esme, but I can say I no longer dislike her. Although my favourite character of this book was Kai, I found myself absolutely loving Xuvry. (I totally just made up that spelling.) He was hilarious in how alien he was to seemingly EVERYTHING and I loved his attitude. I think he was the best made character despite my preference for others. I also love that many characters get a redemption arc, but not all of them. This aspect definitely makes the entire series much more realistic... or rather as realistic as you can get in a universe with multiple alien species converging.
-| Spoiler over! |-
I went into this book worried, and actually came out with happy feelings and tears of happiness. I absolutely recommend this to everyone whp has gotten this far!

The seemingly endless war with the Grutex has caused many inconveniences for Amanda, but none of those have been as bad as losing the funding for the project she is working on, which is supposed to help save humanity. When she foolishly risks her life to continue her research, Amanda is thrown into the path of an alien, the likes of which she has never seen, who claims she is his mate. The problem is, he isn’t the only one making that claim.

I absolutely LOVE this story! Bought book two!
Évalué le: 2022-05-06
This is one of my favourite stories in a very long time! I LOVE the plot, I LOVE the characters, I LOVE LOVE the setting and I LOVE LOVE LOVE the relationship between Zar, Oshin, and Amanda. I've always thought two men together was hot and this story is no different!
One thing I find most authors struggle the most with, is conversation. Not only is the dialogue absolutely perfect in this book, the humor is so hilarious it often finds me pleasantly surprised by my own fit of laughter!
I had to remove one star because I wasn't the biggest fan of the narrator's female voice. It was ok, but it really wasn't particularly believable as a sound that would come from women's vocal chords. That said, thisnis literally the only negative I felt.
I related to my hubby as well about some parts of the story and he didn't see any believability within the science based explanations nor descriptions. This was nowhere near glaringly obvious enough for me to not only bother me, it was so well handled I hadn't even noticed! For someone who has a keener eye or deeper knowledge. If this kind of thing bothers you, tread carefully. Otherwise, get comfy and settle in for a great first novel to what I hope will become one of my absolute favourite stories of all time.

Robyn Peltier moved to Los Angeles after her young husband's sudden death. Though she's still grieving, the challenges of her new life as the PR consultant to Portia Kane - the world's most famous celebutante wannabe - can sometimes be amusing, even distracting. But when her client is gunned down in a nightclub, Robyn is suddenly on the run as the prime suspect in the murder. And as more bodies pile up around her, it seems like only Hope Adams, Robyn's best friend, and Hope's somewhat spooky boyfriend Karl are on Robyn's side. But it's not the police Hope is worried about, and the only way Hope can keep her friend alive is by letting her enter a world she's safer knowing nothing about.

Great story
Évalué le: 2022-05-02
I quite enjoyed this story. It wasnt absolutely amazing, and I didnt LOVE it, but I definitely enjoyed it. That said, I do LOVE this universe and all of the characters within. The particular plot of this one was just a very tad but lackluster. I still gave it full stars because I can't pinpoint what I found not as excellent as the previous series of hers I listened to (the twin teen wolf cubs books.)
I also didn't love the narrator but I don't have a good reason for that either. All in all, this story just passes the greater side of meh, but the fact that it was meh is on me and my preferences. It's a perfectly good book with an interesting stpry.
One good part is that I absolutely HATED the villains. I always believe that hating a villain is a very strong sign of a decent to amazing writer, entirely depending on why they are hated. As for this story, I would say Kelley's work was much closer to amazing than it was decent. I mean I absolutely LOOOOOATHED that evil woman! There are few characters I hate more. This list includes the likes of Geoffry (GoT) Umbridge, and the most evil parent I have ever seen, the adoptive mom in a manga called "An Innocent Sin." The manga is EXTREMELY NSFW, some probably would call it NSFL. The adoptive mother is an absolute monster, and she raised a daughter alongside her adoptive son who is trying to fight her for the most despicable character on the planet! Anyway, The villain in this story could be that terrible mom's daughter too if going only by evil deeds. She would be considered the "good" child, but still enough of a psychopath that she would fit right in! And that's saying something!
