I’m so glad I listened to this book! What a performance by Carey Mulligan!

At times this book is heartbreaking, as well as uplifting and inspirational. Such a beautiful book for anyone struggling with mental health. Feels similar to a Wonderful Life, but with a female lead. So many relatable points throughout with memorable commentary about starting over and learning to live for oneself over fulfilling the dreams of others.

I highly recommend this read if the subject matter appeals. I would give this listen a 10/5 review. The performance was outstanding. I listened all the way through in one go and I know I’ll listen to it again.

I loved this memoir so much that I was actually bereft when it ended. Listening to Hannah tell their story was a joy in itself. There's not much comedy, but they toss in a little gem every so often. Their story is heartbreaking and, also inspiring. What Hannah endured is both deeply unjust and sad, but how they grew along the way is incredibly inspiring. I especially loved what was shared about their ADHD and Autism diagnosis and how they learned to set themselves up for success afterwards.

I absolutely loved the comedy show Nanette. I've watched it many times as I also feel the anger portrayed during that show, and I am grateful they followed up with a book to expand more on what led up to it. If you loved the comedy special, you won't be disappointed. Hannah is an amazing storyteller, and what they are sharing is invaluable in today's growing hostility towards the lgbtqia2s+ community. This was a valuable listen during pride month and will be folded into my memoir recommendations going forward. Thank you for sharing your story, Hannah!

Listening for the second time, and I loved it just as much. A heartbreaking, but beautiful human story of how addiction affects the families of an addict. It's also an intimate portrayal of what battling addiction looks like and the limited resources available for getting long term help. Filled with compassion, love and perseverance on all fronts. A valuable contribution to anyone on the sidelines of a loved one battling addiction.

Gentle Disclaimer: This is not an easy listen if you've experienced childhood abuse/trauma. That said, the material shared here is incredibly valuable, well researched and relatable. This is a brave share on a topic that doesn't have nearly enough resources. Well done, Stephanie!

As soon as I saw that Matthew Perry had written a memoir, I was excited to listen to it. I loved his portrayal of Chandler so much on Friends, but his struggle with drug use always seemed intriguing, given his fame and good fortune.

I had hoped this memoir would come with all kinds of epiphanies (my bad for having this anticipation). I grew increasingly annoyed the longer I listened to it. Maybe this memoir was written too early in his recovery story. Hard to say, but the writing comes across as a bit of "pity me." This gets harder to listen to when he repetitively talks about how much wealth he's accumulated. It's tough to empathize with him when you imagine someone without wealth trying to navigate addiction recovery.

There's little growth throughout the book as he seems to exist perpetually within the blame game, the self-aggrandizing and self-depreciation stage that drones on repetitively. Don't even get me started on how he speaks of the women he's engaged with (Spoiler: it's a carnival of red flags). He's a very privileged, wealthy addict that doesn't seem ready to be fully accountable for the choices he's made in his life. I hope he gets there, truly.

Not the best addiction memoir I've engaged with, but interesting to view addiction and privilege fueling each other.

Finally, a book that gives a greater scope of how to move forward with the opioid crisis. If only our "leaders" in politics could pay attention to the recommendations and do the right thing. I appreciate the attention towards compassion for people fighting this disease. It's time to understand that this is a medical and mental health crisis and not a choice on the part of the afflicted. Cheers to the organizations in Canada fighting to create an environment for people to safely use and test drugs during this very challenging time with a poisoned drug supply. I hope more resources appear along these lines. Excellent research!

A necessary book for the times we are currently living in. Relevant, well-informed/researched and earnestly portrayed reasons we need to manage our attention. I recommend this book if you have been struggling to focus.
