In an alternative 2011, the Mental Parity movement takes hold. Americans now embrace the sacred, universal truth that there is no such thing as variable human intelligence. Because everyone is equally smart, discrimination against purportedly dumb people is ""the last great civil rights fight."" Tests, grades, and employment qualifications are all discarded. Children are expelled for saying the S-word (“stupid”) and encouraged to report parents who use it at home.

Perfect depiction of out time👌
Évalué le: 2024-06-10
This novel brilliantly toes the line between discomfort and humor, making it an undeniably gripping read that resonates deeply with the absurdity of our times. The way Shriver mirrors our own world makes the story feel almost voyeuristic, as if the reader is peeking into a distorted, yet familiar, mirror. While I would have given the novel a solid four out of five because of the somewhat underdeveloped portrayal of the the mother’s relationship with her kids and the lacking character depth of each the children, I find myself compelled to award it a full five out of five stars to counterbalance the reactionary, unfair one-star reviews it has received. These critiques seem to unwittingly extend the novel’s commentary on cultural hysteria, adding a deliciously ironic layer to the entire reading experience.

At the age of five, Megan Phelps-Roper began protesting homosexuality and other alleged vices alongside fellow members of the Westboro Baptist Church in Topeka, Kansas. Founded by her grandfather and consisting almost entirely of her extended family, the tiny group would gain worldwide notoriety for its pickets at military funerals and celebrations of death and tragedy.

So many personal parallels
Évalué le: 2024-05-08
I picked up this book during a period when I found myself questioning the inconsistencies within left-leaning political ideologies, to which I've long adhered. Reading Megan Phelps-Roper's account of leaving her church resonated deeply with me, as it parallels the sense of disillusionment I've been experiencing. Additionally, the book provided valuable insights into the intricate dynamics of tightly-knit religious families, reminiscent of many Muslim households, which outwardly engage with the world while harboring disdain for those outside their circle, convinced of their own righteousness.
I rated it four stars instead of five because I had hoped for a deeper exploration of the transformation in her thinking. My decision to purchase the book was influenced by numerous interviews I had watched with her, and I anticipated more insight into how her mindset evolved.

I guess I am a post liberal feminist :)
Évalué le: 2024-04-14
As a millennial, I've grown up amidst the wave of "sexual empowerment," finding a sense of liberation from the patriarchal norms ingrained in my Middle Eastern upbringing. While I didn't personally experience many of the negative effects outlined in this book, I witnessed friends struggle to find true empowerment, often realizing that it was the men who were reaping the benefits. It wasn't until I encountered the notion of "polygamy" as a progressive idea that I began to question the true nature of this so-called liberation, seeing parallels with the patriarchal structures of my cultural background.
Delving deeper into the tenets of liberal feminism today, I couldn't ignore the glaring contradictions that seemed to disregard the best interests of women. Despite my aversion to conservative ideals, I found myself grappling with the limitations of liberal feminism. Reading this book was a pivotal moment for me, helping me define my own brand of feminism—one that acknowledges the realities of biology and seeks solutions to level the playing field for women. Henceforth, I proudly identify as a "post-liberal" feminist.
The only aspect of the book that left me wanting more was the exploration of the biological underpinnings behind many women's inclination towards masochistic BDSM. While the author does acknowledge the role of porn in shaping these desires, I felt that the biological aspect was somewhat overlooked. It's hinted at, but not thoroughly addressed.
If I were to offer my honest rating of this book, it would have been a solid 4 out of 5. However, in light of the all-too-common occurrence of biased 1 out of 5 reviews driven more by entrenched ideology than the actual content of the book, I've opted to give it a perfect 5 out of 5.

We are living through the most prosperous age in all of human history, yet we are listless, divided, and miserable. Wealth and comfort are unparalleled, but our political landscape is unmoored, and rates of suicide, loneliness, and chronic illness continue to skyrocket. How do we explain the gap between these truths? And how should we respond? For evolutionary biologists Heather Heying and Bret Weinstein, the cause of our troubles is clear: The accelerating rate of change in the modern world has outstripped the capacity of our brains and bodies to adapt.

Disappointing
Évalué le: 2024-03-23
I'm extending a bit of generosity with my rating for this book. My expectations were high, and I'm quite surprised by its mediocrity. While it contains some engaging insights, these are overshadowed by numerous paragraphs filled with tedious and outdated information that often lulled me to sleep. Regrettably, despite my wishes to the contrary, I cannot justify a higher rating for this book. On a positive note, their podcast offers a much more compelling experience.

For all of the West's failings—terrible food, cold weather and questionable politicians with funny hair to name a few—it has its upsides. Konstantin would know. Growing up in the Soviet Union, he experienced first-hand the horrors of a socialist paradise gone wrong, having lived in extreme poverty with little access to even the most basic of necessities. It wasn't until he moved to the UK that Kisin found himself thriving in an open and tolerant society, receiving countless opportunities he would never have had otherwise.

Light but profound
Évalué le: 2024-03-18
I don't have any major criticisms of this book. However, it didn't deeply move me although it does tackle profound issues. Regardless, I see this book as a casual conversation between friends. I appreciated the humor and the author's insights, particularly his experiences under Soviet rule, which resonated with my own background as an immigrant escaping the oppression of the Islamic Republic of Iran. As someone who came to the West seeking freedom of expression, I'm concerned to see it drifting away from the liberties many hold dear. I hope books like this serve as a wake up call.

Histoire
The Gender Identity Development Service (GIDS), based at the Tavistock and Portman Trust in North London, was set up initially to provide - for the most part - talking therapies to young people who were questioning their gender identity. But in the last decade GIDS has referred more than a thousand children, some as young as nine years old, for medication to block their puberty. In the same period, the number of referrals has exploded, increasing thirty-fold, while the profile of the patients has changed, from largely pre-pubescent boys to mostly adolescent girls.

Chilling but essential to read
Évalué le: 2024-03-15
This book could easily have been a gripping work of fiction, depicting experts swayed by activists and societal pressures to turn a blind eye to what they know is right. How I wish that were the case, as I sit here pondering the chilling reality the author has laid bare. It's a narrative of fear stifling voices, unwarranted trust in senior figures discouraging deeper inquiry, and a deluge of clients raising flags about the applicability of treatments designed for entirely different demographics. AND the blatant homophobia, reminiscent of the governmentally funded transitioning programs in countries like Iran, where I come from. The stark reality depicted within these pages should stand as a solemn reminder to every advocate for social justice about the dangers of pressuring individuals to bypass due diligence in their profession in fear of being canceled. My This is essential reading for anyone striving to do better in face of the intricate challenges and risks inherent in our quest for inclusivity and tolerance.

Since September 11, 2001, the Western world has been preoccupied with Islam and its role in terrorism. Yet, public debate about the faith is polarized. One camp praises "the religion of peace", while the other claims all Muslims are terrorists. Canadian human rights activist Yasmine Mohammed believes both sides are dangerously wrong. In Unveiled: How Western Liberals Empower Radical Islam, Yasmine speaks her truth as a woman born in the Western world yet raised in a fundamentalist Islamic home. Despite being a first-generation Canadian, she never felt at home in the West.

A must read! Thank you🙏
Évalué le: 2024-03-07
Wow! I am incredibly grateful to Yasmine Mohammed for her immense courage in speaking out against the silencing of women. As an Iranian woman who, like many others, was compelled to leave her country to escape the gender apartheid enforced by Sharia laws of the Islamic Republic, I cannot emphasize enough the significance of Yasmine's message to Western feminists. Intersectionality does not imply accepting the oppression of women simply because it originates from another culture; on the contrary, it highlights the need to confront additional oppressive forces. A genuine intersectional feminist would stand in solidarity with women facing such challenges, rather than turning a blind eye or dismissing their struggles. Thank you, Yasmine, for fearlessly advocating for women's rights.

In The War on the West, Douglas Murray shows how many well-meaning people have been fooled by hypocritical and inconsistent anti-West rhetoric. After all, if we must discard the ideas of Kant, Hume, and Mill for their opinions on race, shouldn’t we discard Marx, whose work is peppered with racial slurs and anti-Semitism? Embers of racism remain to be stamped out in America, but what about the raging racist inferno in the Middle East and Asia?

Funny and important but …
Évalué le: 2024-03-06
This book meets my expectations, earning a respectable 3.5 stars, which I'll raise to 4, hoping for improvement in the future. Douglas Murray adeptly highlights societal issues, but often oversimplifies and offers populist solutions. This does nothing to address the fundamental issue which has more to do with tribalism of identity politics and how it is shifting (but not correcting) the power inbalances in the society.
Despite being left-leaning, I appreciate Murray's humor and his critique of leftist hypocrisies. I've read The Madness of Crowds and The Strange Death of Europe and I will continue to read his work, hoping other left-leaning individuals will also engage with his types of views.

Most Americans do not understand the real threat that the “transgender” agenda, or the so-called “gender identity” movement, poses to all of us—especially women and girls—nor do they understand the extent to which it is taking over US law and civil society. The simple truth is that “gender identity” functions to abolish sex, and all of our civic institutions—government, media, academia, and business—have been completely captured by it.

Gender identity ideology is about more than Twitter storms and using the right pronouns. In just 10 years, laws, company policies, school and university curricula, sport, medical protocols, and the media have been reshaped to privilege self-declared gender identity over biological sex. People are being shamed and silenced for attempting to understand the consequences of redefining "man" and "woman". While compassion for transgender lives is well-intentioned, it is stifling much-needed inquiry into the significance of our bodies.

A sad but true account of what is going on
Évalué le: 2023-12-16
As an advocate for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEl), a feminist, a progressive person, and an ally of the LGBTQ community, have often grappled with parts of our new progressive values that feel more like a quasi-religion.
Unfortunately, this cultural shift has negatively affected the majority of equity-seeking groups, including the trans community. This book, serves as a valuable resource in shedding light on the intricacies of what has gone wrong and delves into the nuances of how these circumstances have arised: hasty legislative measures and decisions made by well-intentioned yet naive policymakers. But while the book successfully outlines the issues, it also leaves me pondering the deeper question of how we can establish measures to prevent the misuse of something originally intended to improve our world. °
