Murder is not her department. It’s not like it used to be. Modern-day grim reapers wear business casual, not black cloaks, and they don’t carry scythes, they work for S. C. Y. T. H. E. (Secure Collection, Yielding, and Transportation of Human Essences), where the Department of Natural Causes is the least exciting gig. And that’s how Kathy Valence likes it: boring and predictable. She has enough stress in her personal life; she’s mid-divorce, pregnant, and terrified she doesn’t have what it takes to be a good mom. Then, she goes to pick up a new client and finds his soul is missing.

Great start to an unusual series

I can't wait till the next in series comes out. The basis of the series is the concept of a team of Grim Reapers helping souls transition from this life. The irritating beaurocracy around this is amusing but, at the same time, gives a rigid framework and urgency for the story that unfolds. The author manages to combine a thrilling mystery adventure with gentle humour and wonderful character development. The icing on the cake is the excellent narration. Jaime Lamchick seamlessly moves from character to character without losing a beat.

Histoire
Ruby Young's new Boston apartment comes with all the usual perks. Windows facing the brick wall of the next-door building. Heat that barely works. A malfunctioning buzzer. Noisy neighbors. A dead body on the sidewalk outside. And of course, a ghost. Since Cordelia Graves died in her apartment a few months ago, she's kept up her residency, despite being bored out of her (non-tangible) skull and frustrated by her new roommate. When her across-the-hall neighbor, Jake Macintyre, is shot and killed in an apparent mugging gone wrong outside their building, Cordelia is convinced there’s more to it.

Nothing better than a good cosy mystery with ghosts! I really appreciated the fact that the paranormal aspects weren't too fantastical and that made the storyline so much more engaging. The characters were well developed and likeable (except for the bad guys, of course), and the evolving relationship between Ruby and her non-corporeal room mate was delightful. The lack of a romantic male lead was a relief for me as too often it makes an otherwise good story cloyingingly mushy and irritating.
I finished the book in two days and am now feeling bereft and lost, waiting for the next in series!

Wonderful and unexpected
Évalué le: 2025-02-26
I thoroughly enjoyed both titles in the Aura series. Both books are paranormal thrillers with wonderfully rich characters and plots. I have seen auras for many years, though not as clearly or as consistently as the characters in this book, and can identify with some of the issues mentioned, like being overwhelmed by the emotions of others. I too find crowds too much to handle and have had to learn to shut down my sight in order to avoid being swamped by the feelings and thought of others. It was such a delight to listen to stories I could relate to. I haven't read any other fiction books that describe things I have experienced like that. It's a real shame that Joy Ellis felt the need to stick to thrillers and not mix the genres. I feel sure that if she wrote paranormal thrillers now, they would be snapped up by a whole new readership.

I enjoyed this book almost as much as the previous books. What I missed was our flawed protagonist who has transformed into a wise and humourless person, ah well! The series wraps up with a whole load of redemption and words of wisdom - the latter being quite impressive. All in all, it was a relatively serious book compared to the previous books in the series. I'll miss the stories and the characters, but everything has to end, I suppose.

Disappointing
Évalué le: 2025-02-26
I was hopeful that this series would reflect the history of witchcraft in Britain and the wealth of folklore from Scotland. However, I was really disappointed as it is just complete nonsense wrapped up in a juvenile 'coming of age' story. The writing is juvenile, the narration weak (with a couple of dreadful attempts at non-Scottish accents) and the attempts to mesh quantum physics with spirituality, grandiose and plain stupid. I could go on an on, but the negativity would be obnoxious, so I'll stop here.

I want more!
Évalué le: 2025-02-26
I absolutely adored this book, the characters, the writing and the narration. It is enthralling, witty and full of social commentary as well as having an intriguing plot. Despite the fact that it is a fantasy, the more fantastical aspects were quite believable and very satisfying. I found myself wanting to listen nonstop and simultaneously wanting to make the book last longer. Please, please write more books for grownups that have the same wonderful ingredients Ms. Miller. It is hard to see how to bring the characters back in another book as the story is complete in itself, but I will miss them greatly. Excellent narration from January LaVoy too - a winning collaboration!

Histoire
Perla Wultz lives with her husband, Grant, and their precious daughter, Sophie, in a gated Pasadena community. Affluent, sociable, and accomplished, Perla plays the part of loving wife and mother to perfection. It seems an ideal life, if not for a decades-old crime that has become Perla’s dark and consuming secret obsession. Twenty-three years ago, Leewood Folcrum confessed to murdering two young girls during a birthday party. Though he’s been condemned to a life sentence, his crime is not forgotten.

This was a mixture for me. I enjoyed the mystery and the tense plot, but the characters and their decisions didn't completely hold up for me. There were moments when I was frustrated with the male protagonist and the other main male character as both their decisions and lack of awareness was irritating, albeit essential for the plot to go forward. All in all, a good thriller, but very disturbing. It's hard to believe the author also writes romances!

Histoire
Meet Laszlo, eight-hundred-year-old demon and Hell’s least productive Curse Keeper. From his office beneath Midtown, he oversees the Drakeford Curse, which involves a pathetic family upstate and a mysterious black monolith. It’s a sexy enough assignment—colonial origins, mutating victims, et cetera—but Laszlo has no interest in maximizing the curse’s potential; he’d rather sunbathe in Ibiza, quaff martinis, and hustle the hustlers on Manhattan’s subway.

Gripping horror/fun adventure, brilliantly narrated
Évalué le: 2025-01-11
The narration is Oscar worthy or whatever awards narrators get. The story itself is not exactly laugh out loud, as had been advertised, but has a witty and sometimes satirical turn of phrase. I found myself increasingly involved in the adventure/action and quite sad when the tale came to an end. The ending (no spoilers) did, however, leave me hoping that there could be a sequel at the very least. I really feel the characters should share more adventures with their new reader fans.

Newberry is thrilled to host the highly anticipated convention for the cult hit TV show, Detective Dracula. Local businesses are booming as fans descend upon the quaint town to witness the reunion of the beloved cast. The excitement quickly dies when the star of the show chokes to death on the cherry of his signature cocktail. It seems like a tragic accident—until his ghost communicates otherwise to resident psychic Mia Thorne. Too bad he can’t identify the culprit.

I loved this series
Évalué le: 2025-01-07
I was very sad to have finished this series. It lifted my spirits (no pun intended) at a time when I needed uplifting (world events getting me down). I found the reference to actual herbalism and Wiccan lore to be very refreshing and informative. I am not a fan of fantastical monsters or anything too far from my practiced credulity. The character development in this series is inspiring and the humour genuinely funny. Not a fan of romance, I found the series quite acceptable in that respect - just a hint of healthy relationships without the overwhelming lust and gagging sentimentality of some other series I've started and rejected. Having said all that, this final book in the series is less funny and more self-help-like. It is filled with some very serious and profound insights, which I did appreciate despite reminding me that the series was wrapping up.
I found the voice of the narrator a little hard to deal with initially as she sounds far older than our protagonist. However, despite that, she did a pretty good job. I have tried to listen to other books by this author and have given up as the narrator sounded too juvenile as well as the more fantastical, romance and 'adolescent' nature of the books. More grown-up humour please, Ms. Chase and more believable content!

Histoire
It’s the night shift worker who finds them. Huddled in a hospital store cupboard is elderly Edith Higgins. Knifed to death. Sitting behind her is Staff Nurse Lily Frampton, a scalpel clasped in her blood-soaked hand. No one can understand why this kind-hearted, dedicated nurse would brutally murder a frail patient she’s spent months caring for. That same day, mild-mannered schoolteacher Rod Black is found surrounded by the battered bodies of his pupils. Why would a well-respected teacher beat five schoolboys to death?

Gripping and scary as heck!
Évalué le: 2025-01-06
I thoroughly enjoyed the first book, especially as I could relate to the subject of auras. I can see them to some extent, more so in the past, and can attest to the validity of the descriptions. This book, was even more disturbing than the first book and kept me awake at night - not that I needed to be. The elements of horror, were intense and believable. This book is certainly not a cozy mystery, if that is what is desired. I also have a history of working as a counsellor and hypnotherapist, so the subject matter was right up my alley. Although there are some rather dated elements in both books, such as referring to the gardener as 'Scrubs', (a classist and outmoded way of referring to the 'lower classes' by their last name alone), the series stands up to the test of time. Please, please Joy Ellis, continue this series. The characters and the paranormal elements are wonderful and 'mixed genre' books are all the rage these days, even if they were frowned upon a couple of decades ago. Connecting with energies and the so-called afterlife, isn't considered too 'out there' these days and adds a dimension to detective fiction that elevates it beyond the gloom and gore.
