The Only LitRPG worth reading
Évalué le: 2022-01-18
That's not a backhanded compliment.
These novels are entertaining, engrossing and hilarious by any metric, if you like fantasy.
This latest installment takes a logical step into a new arc that delves into a lot of history referred to in previous novels, but you won't be lost if you haven't read them.
If you haven't read them, you're missing out on smart, wry, irreverent humor mixed with high adventure and action, periodically spiked with moments of intense gravity.
If I had to complain about this series, it would be that there aren't really any gray-area antagonists. The bad guys are bad because they're just jerks, and they're usually jerks because (history occurs and now they twirl their moustaches while having no empathy).
That said, this is not deeply philosophical fare, nor is it meant to be. This is pure fun that exists without exploring thinly veiled sexual fantasies of the author (there is little romance), and does not become cumbersome with stacks of the enumerated "system messages" that make LitRPGs such a slog.
That mechanic is at play here, but it is streamlined and used without becoming a brain- bleeding chore.
I'm a huge fan.
Show up for the adventure, stick around for the banter, and when you want to laugh out loud do yourself a favor and go with it.
The fourth novel in this series is rewarding, smart, and has a wonderful bit of soul at its core.

An amazing ending to one of the greatest ever.

Nothing is left unsaid.
Nothing is left unsettled.
Nothing is easy, nothing is lazy, and everything surpasses expectation to achieve what was hoped.
At the end, all I could say was "Wow".

Jarring shifts in narrative
Évalué le: 2021-12-26
I really wanted to like this series.
I can see that the author wanted to portray all characters as morally grey, while injecting humor into the mix.
Unfortunately, I found myself really disliking just about everyone by the end of the third book,
Also, the sudden shift to a focus on graphic, rough, borderline-forced sex in the second book was completely out of left field. None of these relationships come across as believable.
If you're hoping for the Expanse, there's none of that here.

A LitTPG with heart, brains, and comedy
Évalué le: 2021-09-19
A LitRPG written with true skill, fantastic comedic wit, and narrated by someone with the chops to do the text justice in the delivery.
This book dodges four of the major pitfalls that make so many entries into this genre unfinishable:
First, Shirtaloon knows how to use a thesaurus and has excellent editing. They write with impact, painting vibrant heavy-bass pictures with their prose, and inject proper suspense into conflict. No misused words or lame statements in climactic battles like "I shot him with my bullets until he was dead". Battles feel like battles, and are never boring, while also not taking up so much space that character development becomes stunted.
Second, while the System Messages that are integral to the genre are there, they are used as a narrative tool instead of simply a method by which run-time might be inflated. Neither over or underused. Excellent.
Third, the book is not a thinly veiled (or unapologetic) harem fantasy, and the romance that exists is natural (although not remotely the focus of the story).
Fourth, the comedy is really funny. You will laugh out loud from both the jokes and the vocal delivery. Nothing forced, here, just pure hilarity that brackets moments of real gravity and heartache.
I want a Stache Puppy.

The world will end on Saturday. Next Saturday. Just before dinner, according to The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, the world's only completely accurate book of prophecies, written in 1655. The armies of Good and Evil are amassing and everything appears to be going according to Divine Plan. Except that a somewhat fussy angel and a fast-living demon are not actually looking forward to the coming Rapture. And someone seems to have misplaced the Antichrist.

Smart, hilarious and irresistibly enjoyable
Évalué le: 2019-08-21
An amalgamation of the very best parts of Pratchett and Gaiman. The funny doesn't stop, the imagery and atmosphere are powerful enough to lift paint, the message and the keen minds behind it are sharp enough that it must be considered while it is so effortlessly, enjoyably delivered that the consideration is nearly an act of pleasant subversion.
Mr Jarvis does the sort of fantastic, organic, believable voice work that makes most others seem uninspired. His comedic timing is flawless, his character specific mannerisms and tonal shifts are beyond reproach, and I will be looking for other titles he has narrated with the same gusto that Tim Reynolds' work drove me to discover new authors just to hear him speak.
The story is over now, like the best dream, and I wish there was more simply because I didn't want to stop experiencing this perfect production.
To those who made this audio production possible, and above all to sirs Pratchett, Gaiman and Jarvis:
Thank you for making this thing, that sets an "ineffable" bar for its breed.

But the reality is she's drowning in debt, has no prospects, and is forced to move back to Queens, where her parents remind her daily that they are very interested in grandchildren. Then, one morning, she is kidnapped, interviewed, and hired as an administrative assistant by the Corporation for UltraHuman Protection. Superheroes for hire, using their powers for good. One of the funniest listens I've had in some time! I'm not one to laugh out loud while listening to a book, but this one got me several times.
