I wasn’t sure my attention could be held for 10 hours on the subject of this amazing bird but I was left feeling disappointed the book was over..great narration and descriptions..felt I was there..thank you!

Every now and then a natural history book comes out that is so profound that it makes you see the world differently, this is one of them. I was expecting a natural history of a subfamily of falcons. I got that and an amazing telling of the natural history of South America through the lens of caracaras. Would recommend to ant Naturalist interested in south america

A book on birds how interesting could it be? Extremely. If you are even considering this you will probably love it.

This book is sustained poetry. It is simply breathtaking. I kept finding myself getting lost in the description (in a good way). Sentence after sentence being remarkably elegant. I am convinced Jonathan Meiburg could have written about anything and it would have been interesting. And just realizing that the author narrated it, is such a cherry on top. Jonathan Meiburg Thank you for this book. There are a few notable times in my life when I recall something that wasn't of usual interest being remarkable because of the people behind it, like a historic season for an underdog team of a sport you never particularly paid attention to. This is one of those times. This feels like classical music and a fanatic. I think about the craftsmanship of this book often. Jonathan, have made me aware of a whole new genre that I had no idea I loved.

If you aren't a bird geek (I wasn't) you might not have a mental picture for the birds. I was able to just let the more technical details wash through me and go by while enjoying the cadence of the book. Later on I started googling the birds and that help me distinguish them. This book isn't homework. Don't worry about 'falling behind' there is plenty to enjoy and learn. And the later chapters are a breeze if the beginning ones aren't.

Also he does the voices, and in this type of book that is needed. It comes to life.

when the author is on point and speaking about the very interesting caracara birds this is a pretty good book. unfortunately there is a bit too much for my liking which veers away from this talking about his exploring and the other old author / naturalist.
