À propos de cet audio
"In the summer of 1991 I was a normal kid. I did normal things. I had friends and a mother who loved me. I was just like you. Until the day my life was stolen. For eighteen years I was a prisoner. I was an object for someone to use and abuse. For eighteen years I was not allowed to speak my own name. I became a mother and was forced to be a sister. For eighteen years I survived an impossible situation. On August 26, 2009, I took my name back. My name is Jaycee Lee Dugard. I dont think of myself as a victim. I survived. A Stolen Life is my story in my own words, in my own way, exactly as I remember it."

Histoire
Two victims of the infamous Cleveland kidnapper share the story of their abductions, their decade in captivity, and their final, dramatic rescue. On May 6, 2013, Amanda Berry made headlines around the world when she fled a Cleveland area home and called 911, saying: “Help me, I’m Amanda Berry...I’ve been kidnapped, and I’ve been missing for 10 years". A horrifying story rapidly unfolded. Ariel Castro, a local school bus driver, had separately lured Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight to his home, where he kept them chained in the basement.

Verteran investigative journalist Stevie Cameron first began following the story of missing women in 1998, when the odd newspaper piece appeared chronicling the disappearances of drug-addicted sex trade workers from Vancouver's notorious Downtown Eastside. It was not until February 2002 that pig farmer Robert William Pickton would be arrested, and 2008 before he was found guilty, on six counts of second-degree murder. These counts were appealed and in 2010, the Supreme Court of Canada rendered its conclusion.

I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned. But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. I am no victim—that word only describes what happened to me. Nor am I a survivor because that implies I am over it. I am a Phoenix—a work in progress. This is my story....

In September 2007, Elissa Wall, the star witness against polygamous sect leader Warren Jeffs, gave captivating testimony of how Jeffs forced her to marry her first cousin at age 14. This harrowing account proved to be the most compelling evidence against Jeffs, showing the harsh realities of this closed community and the lengths to which Jeffs went in order to control the sect's women. Now, in this courageous memoir, Wall tells the incredible story of how she emerged from the confines of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints and helped bring one of America's most notorious criminals to justice.

When Jade Kelly met her new foster mother, she thought her prayers had been answered. Kindly Carol Docherty was everything her violent, drug-addicted mother was not. Loving and nurturing, she fed and clothed 10-year-old Jade and offered a life free of fear from near constant abuse. Or so Jade thought. As soon as social workers in Lancashire stopped their regular checks on Jade’s progress, Carol turned. Over the next six years Jade and three other girls were effectively kept prisoner in a bedroom she called the ‘bad room’ and subjected to unrelenting physical and mental abuse.

A harrowing story of survival
This story was obviously written by Jaycee Dugard and not a ghost writer. It is an incredibly powerful story, raw in detail but simplistic.
Jaycee's narrative had the ability to place me in the small room alongside her that would be her prison for years. This is not an easy read/listen. She doesn't spare the listener with euphemisms.
I cannot imagine the courage and healing she would have had to go through before deciding to delve back into her nightmare for the rest of us to hear. This courageous young woman endured abuse beyond what I could ever imagine. To be able to come out the other side and give us a raw look into the worst years of her life is beyond heroic.

I remember Jaycee’s abduction, and her remarkable reappearance so very many years later. A true miracle. I appreciate her courage in writing this book - and for narrating it herself. Despite all she has been through, she has such a positive outlook. She is an inspiration.

A gripping account
Listening to Jaycee talk about her experience was gut wrenching. I am 10 years younger than her and could’ve been her daughter which is incredibly sad. I now have my own little girls and listening to Jaycee talk about what she went through, how she got home and seeing her family again brought me to tears countless times. I’m so so happy to hear her story end in a beautiful way. I’ll be listening to her next book. What a strong amazing beautiful person!

Wow. Wow. Wow.
Jaycee represents the very best of humanity by rising above and beyond what can be described as a literal living hell with unprecedented grace. I am absolutely inspired by her character. Yes, it is a difficult story to hear but don’t deny yourself the opportunity to learn from Jaycee’s wisdom and tenacious positivity.

Eye opening
I have watched the documentary on netflix and read different article online about Jaycee's story but this book is such a different view and so eye opening that I can't properly put into words. I am happy that she had the strength to be able to read this herself it shows the strength she has gotten since this horrible ordeal.
