Good introduction
It's a good enough introduction to African history and it's multiple kingdoms, empires, states and clans. Yet some of the issues it has are the prevalence of eurocentric bias (history as the story of "great men and women", instead of things happening to peoples and retold as "great women and men"'s achievements; also the constant centralisation of power when there's no historical certainty, for sure if them, that the organization was strictly hierarchical), the presentation as epic quests instead of just history, and the sometimes lack of objectivity ("such and such was not like his namesake: he was weak... " etc). Everytime the book says "luckily" or talks about "prosperity", I'm left to wonder from whose point of view, exactly?!
Anyway, it's still a good enough dive and discovery of some of the actors of the time and the information we currently have on them.
