À propos de cet audio

"Ashes of the Sun is fantasy at its finest" (Nicholas Eames, author of Kings of the Wyld)

Long ago, a magical war destroyed an empire, and a new one was built in its ashes. But still the old grudges simmer, and two siblings will fight on opposite sides to save their world in the start of Django Wexler's new epic fantasy trilogy.

Gyre hasn't seen his beloved sister since their parents sold her to the mysterious Twilight Order. Now, 12 years after her disappearance, Gyre's sole focus is revenge, and he's willing to risk anything and anyone to claim enough power to destroy the Order.

Chasing rumors of a fabled city protecting a powerful artifact, Gyre comes face-to-face with his lost sister. But she isn't who she once was. Trained to be a warrior, Maya wields magic for the Twilight Order's cause. Standing on opposite sides of a looming civil war, the two siblings will learn that not even the ties of blood will keep them from splitting the world in two.

I really enjoyed the story

I'm hoping that there will be a sequel because this was a wonderful story with interesting themes. the characters were well established and they fit their roles splendidly.

Fun world and a good story about two main characters with opposing world views. I look forward to more.

TRULY PHENOMENAL!

READ THIS NOW!

As a reader, I am a master of fantasy. It's what I read and love more than any other genre and for my YouTube channel I tend to read about 120 books a year. I'm already more than halfway past that goal as of this book's July publication. I'm not exaggerating when I say this is among the best books I've read in the last 2-3yrs. Ashes of the Sun seriously impressed me and I'm shattered I have to wait so long for a sequel.

This book follows two siblings who are ideologically opposed after having been torn apart in childhood. Maya belongs to the Twilight Order, the guardians of humanity, sworn to the Chosen who disappeared after wielding destructive power in the war to exterminate the Ghouls 400yrs ago. The Order are the highest authority in the land and they make sure to keep it that way by maintaining their stranglehold on humanity by way of an endless quest to seek out and destroy the technology and magic of the ghouls.

On the other side we have Gyre, Maya's older brother whose eye and whose family was destroyed by the Order Centarch who abducted Maya as a child. Gyre has been searching his whole life for something powerful enough to cast off the yoke the the Order keeps of humanity, and to get his personal revenge doing it.

This world is really interesting as it and its economy rely on a lot of Ghoul-derived technology called arcana that people scavenge, ignorant or contemptuous of the Order interdictions against it. The world is also run rampant with a Plague, magical in nature, as well as the humans called Darkeen who wield the Ghoul fleshmagic that seems to have created it in the first place. The Darkeen are humans who are hunted down relentlessly for using Ghoul magic to craft Plague-beasts, nightmarish creatures who ingest other animals (love humans preferably) to repurpose and twist the corpses in order to grow.

And if that weren't bad enough, it seems like the two sides of that ancient war might not be as dead and buried as everyone thought, for forces are stirring that may plunge the world back into conflict, to unleash a level of horror that saw unfathomable atrocities committed unless someone can stop them in the pulse pounding tale that with see new legends rise–the legends of Silvereye and Burningblade.

Wow.

Fan-friggen-tastic. The story itself is one of my favorites of the year...and holy cow the narrator on this one did a phenomenal job and took a five star book and cranked it up to 3000. Yup. I loved this audiobook 3000.

Such a fun read!

Narrator was excellent. Took me a bit to get into this one - had to go back and listen to the start a second time, but we’ll worth it. Such a fun read!

Over-The-Top Narration Worsens The Situation

I am not entirely sure why I repeatedly found 'Scooby-doo' creeping into my mind while listening to this Django Wexler offering:

Maybe it was the teams of quirky young misfits sent on missions of discovery throughout the realm (the 'Mystery Machine' would not have been out of place).
Perhaps the sophomoric 2-dimensional quest-based plotting did it.
I'm sure the drawn-out lesbian attraction plotline played a role (a straight-up Velma/Daphne dynamic if ever I've seen one).

Regardless, as a fan of the Fantasy genre, I was disappointed with the Junior-High-School sensibilities of this presentation. To be certain, Wexler's worldbuilding is imaginative (including competing sociopolitical factions, terrifying monsters (called "Plaguespawn") & martial magical constructs, and the heavily-regulated magical remnants of a 400-years-gone arcane past that only remains in archeological sites and a thriving black market); the magic system is interesting (involving rare individuals born with the ability to tap into elemental powers); action scenes are well-choreographed & viscerally gory; and a clever "one-sibling-on-each-side-of-a-civil-war" plot device is used to full effect.. but the negation of all of that with the overlying YA immaturity of this book was both dissatisfying and annoying.

Reader Imogen Church further draws attention to the deficiencies in the book with cartoonish character interpretations, too. Already questionable dialogue is underlined by some of the most jawdropping overacting that I have heard in a long time (there were points in this audiobook where I was praying that Wexler wouldn't put any more children in the tale, for example: Church's shrill reading of little guys made me - a physician - consider rooting for infanticide).

I rate 'Ashes Of The Sun' a mere 4 stars out of 10. As a 'Plus' option, it wasn't a crazy way to spend a few quiet afternoons, I guess.. but spend your Credit elsewhere should they ask for one.

Just not good

Story is uninteresting and unoriginal and characters are boring.
Narration was hard to listen too with so many of the voices being super annoying. She made most of the main women’s voice come across and whiny children.
So many better books out there.
