A REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK ∙ AN INSTANT #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER ∙ Two writers compete for the chance to tell the larger-than-life story of a woman with more than a couple of plot twists up her sleeve in this dazzling and sweeping novel from Emily Henry.

Alice Scott is an eternal optimist still dreaming of her big writing break. Hayden Anderson is a Pulitzer-prize winning human thundercloud. And they’re both on balmy Little Crescent Island for the same reason: to write the biography of a woman no one has seen in years—or at least to meet with the octogenarian who claims to be the Margaret Ives. Tragic heiress, former tabloid princess, and daughter of one of the most storied (and scandalous) families of the twentieth century.

When Margaret invites them both for a one-month trial period, after which she’ll choose the person who’ll tell her story, there are three things keeping Alice’s head in the game.

One: Alice genuinely likes people, which means people usually like Alice—and she has a whole month to win the legendary woman over.

Two: She’s ready for this job and the chance to impress her perennially unimpressed family with a Serious Publication.

Three: Hayden Anderson, who should have no reason to be concerned about losing this book, is glowering at her in a shaken-to-the core way that suggests he sees her as competition.

But the problem is, Margaret is only giving each of them pieces of her story. Pieces they can’t swap to put together because of an ironclad NDA and an inconvenient yearning pulsing between them every time they’re in the same room.

And it’s becoming abundantly clear that their story—just like the tale Margaret’s spinning—could be a mystery, tragedy, or love ballad . . . depending on who’s telling it.©2025 Emily Henry (P)2025 Penguin Audio

Ce que les critiques en disent

"Her best-selling romances have made her a new standard-bearer of the genre."—The New York Times

“Readers can count on Em-Hen to transport them to a kinder, sunnier, and funnier galaxy where happy endings can be counted on . . . Henry’s magic elixir, it seems, is to return again and again to a simple boy-meets-girl formula while writing textured novels populated with vivid characters that never feel formulaic: she takes us back to a time when we believed, with all our being, that love conquers all.”—The Boston Globe

“A sweeping love story about the choices we make and the threads that knit us together. Thoughtful, moving, and deliciously tender. Emily Henry is as captivating as ever. I love everything she does.”—B.K. Borison, New York Times bestselling author of First Time Caller

The story has an interesting plot, but I feel that the characters were not quite developed, and the sex scenes are too graphic but do not help to make the book better.

Interesting but ...

Loved the book, the story, the way it unfolds, the pacing. Such a cute novel!

I really enjoyed listening to this book. Characters were great and it had an intriguing story line.

Loved it!

I found this book hard to “put down”, especially in the first handful of chapters. The premise of the book is intriguing and the narrator is excellent. I became increasingly disappointed with the “will they, won’t they” sexual tension smut. I wish the story could just be about the story, without the constant sexual references. I feel like I can’t even picture the character, Alice, due to lack of information about her appearance; but I can remember about 7 different intimate moments explained in detail. The author has a lovely and eloquent writing style, but I just don’t do smut.

Interesting story, but disappointed with the smut

Aug. 2025 re-read (listen?): Julia Whelan is SO perfect for the audiobook. I feel like my emotions were amplified listening to this one and now I love GBBL that much more.

“It’s Alice, Alice on my mind. Alice all the time.”

Every time Emily Henry releases a new book, I need a dark room and 3-5 business days to emotionally recover after finishing it. I absolutely LOVED GBBL.

This book won’t be for everyone, and honestly I wasn’t even sure if I’d like it at first - there’s a story within a story, and wasn’t Emily’s typical rom-com vibes. But, GBBL has quickly become one of my favourites of hers because it is just that: it’s different. The story within the story added such a unique element and twist to the plot, and I won’t lie to you, that reason alone made this one SO good.

Looking at the separate romances, I loved Alice + Hayden and Margaret + Cosmo both so much, tying past and present together and apart. My heart shattered for both Margaret and Alice at different times, but alas, you know that Emily always gives us a happy ending 🙏🏻 . The Ives Dynasty, the once-in-a-lifetime kind of love (that we get to read about TWICE!!!), grumpy x sunshine, Alice’s relationship with her mother, Hayden finally softening in his core, Margaret’s true story, a hella complex family dynamic; I can’t get enough.

Also - the parallels between GBBL and Beach Read had me kicking my feet in this one. I swear that Emily used Gus as inspo for Hayden and I am certainly not mad about it!!! My favourite little grumpy potato.

“Every time we try to protect each other, all it does is cost us more time together, and I'm not willing to lose any more. I want to be with you. Nothing else is going to matter to me more than that. Not at the end of my life. Not even now. Nothing will matter more than who I spent my time with, and I want it to be you. I need it to be you."

5 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is my favourite Emily Henry book by a long shot, and I really enjoyed her others. I found this so poignant and heart squeezing. Really wonderfully paced with a broad spectrum of personalities, histories, tensions and some surprises. I may have cried a bit 🙃 I’m a sucker for heartfelt family moments though

As always, Julia Whelan narrates this wonderfully.

Heart Squeezing

I honestly wish I could get my money back. The way the narrator said croissant ruined the entire story for me. I wanted to love it, but it fell really flat for me. Couldn’t grip the characters and didn’t feel like the story was going anywhere productive

A rewrite of the 7 husbands of Evelyn Hugo….

Love story was questionable and undeveloped - why did these two even like each other?
Normally don’t mind Julia Whalen but at the climactic moments she was talking so fast and nearly screaming - talk about unpleasant.

Meh
