Instant national bestseller

An extraordinary new novel set in the world of John le Carré's most iconic spy, George Smiley, written by the acclaimed novelist Nick Harkaway

It is spring in 1963 and George Smiley has left the Circus. With the wreckage of the West’s spy war with the Soviets strewn across Europe, he has eyes only for a more peaceful life. And indeed, with his marriage more secure than ever, there is a rumor in Whitehall—unconfirmed and a little scandalous—that George Smiley might almost be happy.

But Control has other plans. A Russian agent has defected, and the man he was sent to kill in London is nowhere to be found. Smiley reluctantly agrees to one last simple task: interview Szusanna, a Hungarian émigré and employee of the missing man, and sniff out a lead. But, as Smiley well knows, even the softest step in the shadows resounds with terrible danger. Soon, he is back there, in East Berlin, and on the trail of his most devious enemy’s hidden past.

Set in the missing decade between two iconic instalments in the George Smiley saga, The Spy Who Came in from the Cold and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Nick Harkaway’s Karla’s Choice is an extraordinary, thrilling return to the world of spy fiction’s greatest writer, John le Carré.

The characters are well realised, I must admit. The voice actor is marvelous. It's well-written even. But there's no clever plot and denouement that one expects from the best Le Carré novels. They are all chasing a man for some reason. He ends up dead. The "mysterious" title? Karla chose to eliminate everyone. That's it. What was the big deal? Wasted a credit.

Trying hard to be like John Le Carré. Failing miserably.

I'm so relieved by how much I enjoyed this book. He did Smiley justice and since there was ten years (in story time) missing from Smiley's life I can only hope we get a number of books from the author.

Vintage le Carré-alike

The overall story is in keeping with the Smiley series, but does introduce some "modernization" such as introducing "more cows" as there are "too many bulls" in the service. Having a South Asian counterfeiter living in Switzerland stretches credulity in the start of the 1960s along with a Windrush Jamaican female intelligence agent. It would be like suggesting that Moscow center had a black African mole, etc. Peak woke is now over, and lets get back to greater historical accuracy. If you want to introduce multiculturalism into spy stories, then do so in the modern era. Nothing wrong with that. Otherwise a reasonable additional to make George smile.

Not bad for the son of John. Some woke updating.
