À propos de cet audio
A gripping standalone spy thriller from the #1 Sunday Times bestselling author of Slow Horses, with a riveting reveal about a disastrous MI5 mission in Cold War Berlin—an absolute must-listen for Slough House fans.
New from the author of Slow Horses, now an Apple Original series from Apple TV+, starring Gary Oldman and Kristin Scott Thomas.
Two years ago, a hostile Prime Minister launched the Monochrome inquiry, investigating "historical over-reaching" by the British Secret Service “to investigate historical over-reaching.” Monochrome’s mission was to ferret out any hint of misconduct by any MI5 officer—and allowed Griselda Fleet and Malcolm Kyle, the two civil servants seconded to the project, unfettered access to any and all confidential information in the Service archives in order to do so.
But MI5’s formidable First Desk did not become Britain’s top spy by accident, and she has successfully thwarted the inquiry at every turn. Now the administration that created Monochrome has been ousted, the investigation is a total bust—and Griselda and Malcolm are stuck watching as their career prospects are washed away by the pounding London rain.
Until the eve of Monochrome’s shuttering, when an MI5 case file appears without explanation. It is the buried history of a classified operation in 1994 Berlin—an operation that ended in tragedy and scandal, whose cover-up has rewritten thirty years of Service history.
The Secret Hours is a dazzling entry point into Mick Herron’s body of work, a standalone spy thriller that is at once unnerving, poignant, and laugh-out-loud funny. It is also the breathtaking secret history that Slough House fans have been waiting for.

Former London policeman Alan Banks relocated to Yorkshire seeking some small measure of peace. But depravity and violence are unfortunately not unique to large cities. His new venue, the quaint little village of Eastvale, seems to have more than its fair share of malefactors---among them a brazen Peeping Tom who hides in night's shadows spying on attractive, unsuspecting ladies as they prepare for bed.

When Anna Hartley’s husband, Henry, calls her with a terrible, guilty confession, she can’t believe what she hears. It has to be a bad joke—the mild, predictable artist she married would never hurt a fly, let alone commit murder. D-Day, June 6, 1944, and the 76 days of bitter fighting in Normandy that followed the Allied landing, have become the defining episode of World War II in the west - the object of books, films, television series, and documentaries. Yet as familiar as it is, as James Holland makes clear in his definitive history, many parts of the OVERLORD campaign, as it was known, are still shrouded in myth and assumed knowledge.

Impressive. Deep. Not for beginners.
If you are a diehard Slow Horses fan or a tried and true spy novel buff here’s a full package. Not easy. Not straightforward but great detailed Dickensian writing. The buildings and environs are characters too. Don’t blow through the descriptive. Slow it down and savour it. It’s worth the effort like any good novel is.
Enjoy.

Great intrigue and wonderful storytelling
Mr. Herron draws you in slowly and surely. The character development is methodical introduction of the British security complexity. A great story of entitlement blended with necessitates.

Pay attention
A long and convoluted story with twists and turns. You have to pay attention or you will get lost. Having read the Slow Horses will assist you in unraveling the murky plot, proceedings and fall out from the Cold War. Some people are just not very nice.

A Fantastic Listen
This is a standalone book, and it works as such. However, for those who have listened to all the Slow Horses novels, this novel provides a backstory for a couple of our favourite Slow Horses characters. It is a very complex story involving many “flashbacks” but towards the end of the novel, the importance of the flashbacks is revealed.
As for the narrator, Gerald Doyle, he is top drawer. The way he keeps track of all the voices is simply fantastic. He “gives away” the couple of the Slow Horses characters because Slow Horses fans will recognize the voices - which is kind of fun.

Simply the Best
It’s hard to decide whose the best in the book - the author or the narrator. Mick Herron has another winner - this one kept me on the hook til the very end - and Gerard Doyle has become one of my favourite narrators after listening to over 250 books on Audible. I loved getting the back story on my favourite Joes in this novel. I didn’t want it to end. When’s the next one!!??

The gold standard for audio books
This prequel to the Slow Horses series is a masterpiece. Mick Herron’s storytelling, which combines elaborate interwoven timelines and very, very smart dialogue, is perfectly paired with a virtuosic performance by Gerard Doyle. I enjoyed reading the ebook that I borrowed from the library while listening. I hope that the neatly wrapped up conclusion to this story doesn’t mark the end of the series.
