Description

The long-awaited memoir from the iconic Rock and Roll Hall of Famer, Rush bassist, and bestselling author of Geddy Lee's Big Beautiful Book of Bass.

Includes two new songs by Geddy Lee, available exclusively in the My Effin’ Life audiobook.

Geddy Lee is one of rock and roll's most respected bassists. For nearly five decades, his playing and work as co-writer, vocalist and keyboardist has been an essential part of the success story of Canadian progressive rock trio Rush. Here for the first time is his account of life inside and outside the band.

Long before Rush accumulated more consecutive gold and platinum records than any rock band after the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, before the seven Grammy nominations or the countless electrifying live performances across the globe, Geddy Lee was Gershon Eliezer Weinrib, after his grandfather murdered in the Holocaust.

As he recounts the transformation, Lee looks back on his family, in particular his loving parents and their horrific experiences as teenagers during World War II.

He talks candidly about his childhood and the pursuit of music that led him to drop out of high school.

He tracks the history of Rush which, after early struggles, exploded into one of the most beloved bands of all time.

He shares intimate stories of his lifelong friendships with bandmates Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart—deeply mourning Peart’s recent passing—and reveals his obsessions in music and beyond.

This rich brew of honesty, humor, and loss makes for a uniquely poignant memoir.

Incredibly Insightful.

Just like their music, this most insightful look at what makes one of Canada’s greatest frontman of one of Canada’s greatest bands of all time tick.

Effin' Amazing

This is one of the best memoirs I've ever read or listened to. And "listening" to this in Geddy's own voice is, in my opinion, the best way to consume this book. (Although I also have the hard copy which contains a lot of great photos). I loved everything about this book! It is so well written and well put together. I just loved listening to Geddy talk about his childhood and his rock & roll life, and just all his fascinating life experiences—both good and bad. I highly recommend this book. Even if you're not a Rush fan, you'll love it.

Bought the print edition as well but love to hear the whole story from Mr. Lee himself.

Bought the print edition as well but love to hear the whole story from the writers lips , an added bonus to her other narrators as well as the songs at the end of the book.

A Story of Discovery Across 50 Years

A phenomenal story presented by a man I could listen to for days on end - which is precisely what I was able to do as I knocked this out in just a few days while also listening to some of the lesser spun albums in my collection for so much added perspective on those records.

Heartfelt

Wow! To start I must admit I am the ultimate Rush fan although I am sure that everyone reading this feels the same about themselves. I’m 61 years old and began listening to Rush in my early teens, putting it back to shortly after the term when the band began producing its first couple of albums. Been to lots of their concerts, read every single book ever written on or by Rush including Neil Peart’s books. Every little bit of trivia I can read on the group is locked into my cranial vault. I love Rush. Having said that, Getty‘s book is not just another Rush book. Sure it has a few bits and pieces in it on their albums but it’s really more of a human story. I particularly love the ending chapters where he relays his Experiences of getting older and dealing with the death of Neil and other friends. And his wonderful relationship with his grandson. Getty, through this book, has helped me mature a bit. Yeah, I’m kind of old myself, but I needed some maturity lessons from a guy as well balanced as him. You can achieve lots of success in your life - and I have. But at the end of the day, all that matters in life is the people. Thank you Getty, for pointing this in an even more poignant manner than I would have figured out on my own. What a wonderful book and a wonderful story. I can’t endorse this book enough. Almost an essential guide to life.

One of the best biographies I have ever read

It’s not because I’m a Canadian, or a huge Rush fan or that I vaguely remember stubby beer bottles, that I truly enjoyed listening to this audiobook. The reason is that Geddy Lee is a phenomenal writer, and kept me riveted from page 1.
Highly recommend listening to the audio version.

An Amazing Life Story

Geddy Lee, takes his life pallette and paints a glorious work of art. I laughed and I cried as I was taken along through so many moments, visually creating every story in my head and my heart. Quite simply, perfect. A must read and MUST LISTEN!!

A man of grace

Being a lifetime Rush fan but never deep diving into the band members lives, this was a real treat. Even moreso read by Geddy himself. He is a natural story teller and the book did not require degenerate rock roll anecdotes to be interesting. Definitely worth the time. A touching man.
