À propos de cet audio

YOU’RE MINE IN LIFE AND DEATH—BODY AND SOUL.

In the depths of the Finnish wilderness, more than wolves roam the dark woods.

When a death goddess attacks their village, best friends Siiri and Aina prove helpless to stop her from dragging Aina into Tuonela, the mythical underworld.

Determined to save her beloved Aina, Siiri braves a dangerous journey north, seeking help from the greatest shaman of legend—the only person ever to venture into Tuonela and return alive. There’s only one problem … the stories say he’s dead.

In Tuonela, the cruel Witch Queen turns Aina’s every waking moment into a living nightmare. But Aina soon learns that the God of Death himself has plans for her.

To escape, she strikes a costly bargain with him, not knowing that Siiri plots a daring rescue.

In this sweeping fantasy adventure—perfect for fans of Adrienne Young and Genevieve Gornichec—hope and love must conquer even death itself.

“Rich, vivid, and brimming with emotion, North is the Night pays touching homage to Finnish culture and mythology while forging a unique path all its own. … You will weep and cheer for Siiri and Aina as they find their strength and claim their power.”—Vaishnavi Patel, New York Times bestselling author of Kaikeyi

Not what I was expecting

The book was marketed as a sapphic romance-fantasy set in Finland’s rich mythology. It really had no romance at all. Aine’s character and choices were beyond annoying and Siiri’s love was a selfish love. The better stories were of Siiri learning to be a shaman and how much the god of death loved a silly human girl. I won’t be reading book two. This was slow paced and kind of boring.

Finnish Folklore

I'm not familiar with Finnish folklore, so this was a nice surprise for me. As I started NORTH IS THE NIGHT, I quickly became immersed in a rich culture with strong characters, strong writing, magic, darkness, and a story that took unexpected twists.

The story follows two young women who are close friends: brash Siiri and sweet Aina, who are separated when Aina is kidnapped by a death goddess and taken to the Underworld. Siiri vows to rescue her friend while Aina must grow and adapt to survive the evil court and its cruel goddesses.

The more I read, the more I enjoyed this book. It has strong characters who grow over a long period of time. They each have their own adventures as they try to increase their strengths. They are both so different, yet I always rooted for them. Siiri and Aina are as fierce as they come and each had an interesting journey. The side characters and antagonists were also very interesting, and I really did enjoy the time I spent in this fantasy version of Finland its folklore.

While this is a long book, the plot was evenly paced and it felt like I was reading a fairytale rather than a simple story. The prose was strong and while this is part of a duology, it feels like it has an ending and resolution. Still, I hope to read more about Tuonela and can't wait for more!
