When the U.S. entered into World War I in 1917, it did so with inadequate forces. In just over a year, Pershing built and hurled a one-million-man army against 40 battle-hardened German divisions, defending the hellish Meuse-Argonne and turning the tide of the war.

With focus and clarity, Lacey traces Pershing's development from Indian fighter to guerrilla warrior against the Philippines insurgency to victorious commander in a world war.

This Jim Lacey-penned Biography of General John J. "Black Jack" Pershing covers the man's military career nicely - from fighting in the Indian Wars to heading training programs at UNL + West Point Academy to fighting in the Spanish-America War/hunting Pancho Villa, a Philippines command skirmishing with Muslim Guerrillas, and ultimately leading all American forces in Europe in WWI. The book covers all aspects of his leadership but is lacking much in-depth commentary on his failed efforts to desegregate the miltary or controversial frontal attack methods/"no quarter on Armistice Day" decisions that likely resulted in heavier casualties than absolutely necessary. Instead, the book offers a straight chronological factually accurate account of a famed General's career. It didn't generate as much thought provocation as I would like as a casual consumer of military history, but informed me most effectively (while neither glorifying nor villifying the man).

Reader Tom Weiner is similarly "effective". Blackstone Audio Inc. provide an exemplary listening product and Weiner delivers the information professionally with a pitch-perfect pedagogical (teaching) tone - like a seasoned History Class lecturer presenting data. The presentation of the book is "adequate".

Altogether, 'Pershing' - an entry in the 'Great Generals' series - was a very good information-packed biography. It rates 7/10-stars.. a serviceable relatively short "free with your subscription" option - but not worth a Credit should they ask for one.


[Note: the discussion of the WWI shift in military tactics from infantry-led setpiece-battle "Open Warfare" to industrialized, meat-grinding attrition "Trench Warfare" is straight-up fascinating. The challenge faced by Military Leadership to adjust to such a daunting reality is worth contemplation]
