Great Mystery/Procedural (set in Ireland)
To be honest, this story incorporating an Officer-involved Shooting has a distinctly "not-European" feel. Dervla McTiernan's plot includes a botched child abduction, a series of murders in a rural town, police corruption, drug trafficking, and strained relationships among LEOs under stress. The vocabulary/prose is creditable, the plot twists are plausible, and the character development is unparalleled (the psychological aspects of the story are genuinely fascinating).
Unfortunately, McTiernan squanders her unique setting somewhat - this reasonably typical plot (for the genre) could take place anywhere in the Western World. In addition, there are stretches of peripheral character exposition in the book that fit poorly (the pacing is consequently a little off in this one), and at least one of the plot threads is disappointingly predictable.
Contributing to my favorable impression of this audiobook, however: the continued outstanding narration from Aoife McMahon. She again reads male voices with a comical octave drop, but exhibits commendable diction, timbre, cadence, and tone. McMahon's Irish accent remains pleasant to listen to for hours and her rate of reading is improved in this installment in the series. Well done, Ms. McMahon & Bolinda Publishing Ltd.
Other reviewers have commented that reading the 'Cormac Reilly' books in order is indispensable - I disagree. There are, indeed, recurring characters & references to events earlier in the series, but McTiernan does a nice job incorporating them into the present plot where necessary. This 7.5/10 star effort has enough standalone merit that you can enjoy it on it's own. Fans of quality Mysteries, engrossing Psychological Explorations of the Crime-fighting ethos, or well-plotted Police Procedurals should enjoy this one.

BLOODY BRILLIANT
This is one of the few book series I would recommend without reservation. I have worked my way through the series and they only improve as you go on. If you like police procedurals/mysteries set in Ireland and fine story telling , then this is the author for you. Plus, the narrator does a grand job. Definitely will be re-listening to them again. You should start at the beginning of the series since there is a ongoing storyline but, I think personally, you will not be disappointed. Can't wait for the next one in the series.

Best police procedural ever
the Cormac Rielly series is totally amazing in every way. Also recommend the short stories written by Dervla McTiernan - excellent story lines and twisty outcomes. The narrator is excellent - lovely Irish accent but easily understood. I cannot possibly recommend this series more enthusiastically!

Loved this series
Started with the included titles but I couldn’t start another without finishing this one. All books are good and easy to listen to. I liked the development from .5 to .7 and so on, the shorter stories at the start were a good introduction for me to this author. I struggled a little at the beginning with the narration but that settled after the first short.
I want to know what happens next to Riley, Fisher and the rest of the good guys. Thanks!

Absolutely brilliant!
I thought this was the best book of the Cormac Reilly series. It appears that McTiernan's writing is getting better as she hones her craft. While books #1 and #2 both had one main, obvious crime, the great thing about this story is that there are actually a number of different things going on at the same time. Some of the issues that popped up towards the end of The Ruin are now under Reilly's magnifying glass, along with the events occurring in a few other seemingly contrasting threads. The way McTiernan weaves the story together is just brilliant. I love how this book is also very character driven, so we really get to know more about 2 central characters: Cormac and Peter.
I do recommend this book!

Great Book!
This is the third book I have read by this author, and I just love them. Love the characters, the story, and all its twists and turns. The narrator is one of the best I've ever heard. Highly recommend this as well as the rest of the series.
