À propos de cet audio

"Brassard's accents—whether French Canadian, Italian, or continental French—create indelible characters. His performance lets us feel Reine Marie's warmth and Armand's affectionate nature, and he adds an additional layer to surly Ruth and her potty-mouthed duck. Exciting and entertaining."—AudioFile (Earphones Award winner)

The 19th mystery in the #1 New York Times-bestselling Armand Gamache series.

Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

That's only the first in a sequence of strange events that begin THE GREY WOLF, the nineteenth novel in Louise Penny's #1 New York Times-bestselling series. A missing coat, an intruder alarm, a note for Gamache reading "this might interest you", a puzzling scrap of paper with a mysterious list—and then a murder. All propel Chief Inspector Gamache and his team toward a terrible realization. Something much more sinister than any one murder or any one case is fast approaching.

Armand Gamache, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, his son-in-law and second in command, and Inspector Isabelle Lacoste can only trust each other, as old friends begin to act like enemies, and long-time enemies appear to be friends. Determined to track down the threat before it becomes a reality, their pursuit takes them across Québec and across borders. Their hunt grows increasingly desperate, even frantic, as the enormity of the creature they’re chasing becomes clear. If they fail the devastating consequences would reach into the largest of cities and the smallest of villages.

Including Three Pines.

Disappointing story and narrator

Not one of Louise Penny's good books. Storyline was very disappointing. The narrator was very difficult to understand and did not hold my attention. Bring back Robert Bathurst, he was the best narrator

Narration isn’t great

Each character sounds much the same as the narrator’s own, so it’s not as easy to follow as the others without a bit of effort. I love all the Louise Penny books but the narration for this particular book lacks enough differentiation. Too bad.

Sadly disappointing and frustrating

This is not what we have come to expect from Louise Penny. The plot was disjointed and confusing. The story felt like a rehash of previous books. To have two trusted and highly placed friends turn out to be enemies to Gamache is a bit much. The detail of the hostile blogger, which could have been interesting, wasn’t used to much effect. I didn’t buy into the motives of the villains either. I would prefer not to have these wide ranging international webs of deceit, but to return to personal secrets, histories and troubled relationships of individual people in Three Pines. That is what the books started with and is what built such a loyal readership.

Bad narration and dark storyline

I have listened to every Louise Penny book and can say up until this book I have enjoyed every one of them. This story line is darker than others. The direction her writing is going is no longer for me. To make things worse the new narrator does not do a good job of making the book come alive. I had trouble distinguishing the characters and it made listening to the book very boring.

Disappointed ...

Tough to get through . Have read all of her books and listened to last 8 and enjoyed them all. Bought this one the day it was released, But both the story and the narrator made it really hard to finish . I wanted to keep an open open mind to the new narrator because change is always tough , but I just found him hard to listen to . Over enunciated and very difficult to tell which character was talking . Gamache sounded weak and to
me nothing like the description of his character, and there were no other familiar or endearing characters . I feel bad to say the story fell flat as well.

A solid Gamache

I was hoping to curl up in Three Pines - but this book just didn’t have enough of the Three Pines focus. However, the story had a thrilling pace and lots of twists and turns. I enjoyed the story - and the new narrator.

Rien de nouveau

Très déçue, très loin de Three Pines et de ce qui fait le charme de la série. Histoire ennuyante. J’ai lu les 18 autres livres, celui-ci n’est pas à la hauteur!

Such a disappointment

This is the first Louise Penny book I have ever DNF’d and will return for refund credit, which is incredibly sad. The new narrator has ruined the wonderful listening experience that made Louise Penny’s previous Three Pines books one of my favourite series on audio. Jean Brassard’s character voices are essentially indistinguishable, making it very hard to follow the plot. The “feel” of the listening experience is no longer an immersive, cozy catch-up with old friends but rather an almost aggressive narration with no depth, warmth, or characterization.

I am a native Quebecer and understand her desire for an “authentic voice” to read the books but given the level of talent and richness the previous narrators brought, this was such a disappointing shift. I will continue to listen to the previous books in the series, but have no desire to purchase future audios if this narrator remains with the series.

Disappointed

I found the storyline very far-fetched and one-dimensional. Three Pines stories were sadly not there only this one plot and the few characters supporting it. The plot itself was not credible. I also did not care for this reader and missed the previous ones. Found it difficult to keep attention because it was a flat performance. I thought that the book would never end. Will have to give special thought and do some research before ordering the next book. Disappointed.

Not the best Gamache best by far

I’ve liked every book in the series, so it’s a new experience to be disappointed at the end of a Gamache book. The plot is gauche and unnecessarily intricate… it is cousu de fil blanc. I didn’t used to be a fan of the previous narrator, but now I sourly miss him… Still glad I read it, but I missed the humanity and yummy Three Pines feeling of the previous books.
