Some people bounce back in response to setbacks; others break. We often think that these responses are hardwired, but fortunately this is not the case. Stoicism offers us an alternative approach. Plumbing the wisdom of one of the most popular and successful schools of thought from ancient Rome, philosopher William B. Irvine teaches us to turn any challenge on its head. The Stoic Challenge, then, is the ultimate guide to improving your quality of life through tactics developed by ancient Stoics, from Marcus Aurelius and Seneca to Epictetus.

Histoire
About 2,500 years ago, Plato wrote a set of dialogues that depict Socrates in conversation. The way Socrates asks questions, and the reasons why, amount to a whole way of thinking. This is the Socratic method - one of humanity’s great achievements. More than a technique, the method is an ethic of patience, inquiry, humility, and doubt. It is an aid to better thinking, and a remedy for bad habits of mind, whether in law, politics, the classroom, or tackling life’s big questions at the kitchen table.

Stranded Desert Island Book! Great Voice. Stoic af
Honesty, best voice. A candle and the bathtub, and you are transported to a wisdom spa of the ages. This book is the last word on stoicism you will ever need. I imagine it will be on rotation in my life until I memorize it. Truly, the way it introduces, then drills down each aspect of the human condition will make you actually realize you are smarter than you know, as it cuts through today's bewildering bad advice. I would bet that you will treasure it. Big statement, but... very possible. 10/10 stars. Seriously, though, if you could take this to a desert island, you'd realize its not at all half bad being stuck there... thats what it does to you. Declutters and clears away the excess vice, vanity, fear, and bs. Amazing audio book for the soul. Makes you calm and wise.

Fantastic
This is an absolute must for anyone interested in Stoicism. It provides a fantastic overview of the tenets of Stoic philosophy by using quotes from the teachings of the ancient Stoics, as well as writings from later thinkers who subscribed to Stoicism. It's a well organized book and I also thought the narration was great.

A very relevant roadmap on Stoicism.
I thoroughly enjoyed Ward Farnsworth's assessment of the principles of Stoicism. I found the responses to the numerous criticisms of the philosophy to be particularly eye opening and thought provoking. The narrator was easy to listen to and complemented the work well.

Best Stoicism book
I have read several books on Stoicism, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and related philosophies and psychology. The book is organised well, with chapters by principal topics, and the reader does a good job reading. My favourite aspect of the book is the excellent use of original source material, particularly the Medications of Marcus Aurelius, and the writings of Seneca, Epictetus, and other original thinkers. When making a particular point, the author quotes one of the philosophers and cites, as in an academic paper, the specific source of the quote (document, page, section). Very helpful in the event that one would like to read the quote in its original context. A book I will 'read' many times I'm sure.
