When Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was the Khalifah, he met his governor Nafi at Usfan, a valley near Makkah. Umar asked Nafi who he appointed to lead the people there, and Nafi named Ibn Abza, a former slave. Surprised, Umar questioned the choice. Nafi explained that Ibn Abza was well-versed in the Qur’an and inheritance law. Umar then recalled a saying of the Prophet (may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
