À propos de cet audio

"A proper twisty thriller."—Sarah Pinborough

A stranger has infiltrated your family…and now he’s taking over.

Paul’s just here to help, or so he claims—sent by a charity for vulnerable people to do odd jobs for elderly widow Gwen. But for Gwen’s daughter Connie, there’s just something about Paul that rings alarm bells from day one. He’s a little too kind, a little too involved…Worse still, Gwen seems to have fallen under his spell.

The last thing Connie wants is a stranger meddling in the safe routine she’s built around Gwen. She loves being the one Gwen turns to for cooking, cleaning and company. But the more Paul visits, the more Gwen is relying on him. By the time he conveniently finds himself between homes and has no choice but to move in, Connie is certain he’s trying to push her out completely.

It’s her word against his, though, and as her attempts to unmask him become ever more desperate she’s not the only one left wondering if she’s lost her grip on reality. But when events start spiralling rapidly out of her control, should Connie wage all-out war on Paul and risk losing Gwen forever—or has that been his plan all along?

Ce que les critiques en disent

“Though not yet a household name, Marrs is an incredibly talented storyteller with a built-in audience who knows what he can do. When unfamiliar readers get their hands on this one, they’ll want more.”Booklist

“I inhaled this book. A novel of second guesses, of mistrustful characters and downright terrifying ones. An absolute ride of a thriller. I loved it.”—L. V. Matthews, author of The Twins and The Silent Waters

Good story

The guys voice. Very annoying, could have done without him. The woman was great.

Average plot

The narrator made this better than it was. The plot was predictable and the end unsatisfying.

A riveting suspense thriller!

I was riveted to this story by John Marrs about two grifters who find themselves in competition with each other when they find they are both conning the same mark. One is playing a long game and the other a short one. Their end-goals are similar, except for one glaring exception: one of them is a serial killer who seduces, tortures, robs, and then kills his elderly mark at the end of his cons. The other befriends them, cares for them, and takes only money and property, which makes her an angel in comparison. The tension in the story between the two grifters mounts to almost unbearable heights as the two struggle to outsmart each other. The story moves at full speed, with excellent timing, story arc, pacing and tension. The ending blew my mind, although I don't believe justice was done. The winner was the only person who had contributed nothing and had done nothing to deserve it. She hadn't even played any role in the story until the very end. But this is one of the features of Marrs' writing--it challenges the reader to work through their own ethics and values. The three narrators are outstanding in their roles. I wouldn't have missed a minute.

Really enjoyed

I really enjoyed this story despite another reader's review spoiling part of it (the review has been since removed). It was well written, well paced with good narrators. Definitely worth the time!

Twisty

John Marrs offers a tale so full of surprises that the unpredictability is striking. I'm usually pretty good at guessing what is coming next, but Marrs had me repeatedly dumbfounded.
True, many of the WTF revelations are straight-up ludicrous (you *really* need to suspend disbelief to accept this story), but the sheer imagination is remarkable. Fortuitously, Marrs writes sufficiently well to make immersion into his silly reality surprisingly easy.

On the less fortunate side, Brilliance Audio Inc. cast the project poorly. To be certain, the full cast is professional and the sound quality is creditable.. but the variability in narrator skill is notable (while Soneela Nankani is legitimately outstanding reading the chief protagonist 'Connie' - the other readers are distinctly below-average).

Altogether, 'The Stranger In Her House' merits 7/10-stars. I feel fortunate to have found this audiobook in the 'Plus' catalog, because - even with the subpar presentation - it would rate a Credit.

Maybe a bit too much going on

I liked this novel and the performance is well done but it didn’t quite stick a 5 star landing for me. I also don’t really love when something ends with a “let’s wrap this all up” chapter. Bit lazy.

Good storytelling

3.75 stars

This was my 8th book by this author and I was very pleased with this one, mostly for the storytelling.

I was hooked from the beginning and I didn’t want to stop reading.

Although slow, with a farfetched storyline and unlikeable characters, I thought it was very entertaining. The development was quite smart.

The cat and mouse chasing was really interesting and one twist was surprising. I could not wait to see who would win the title as the best con artist.

I read the ebook while simultaneously listening to the audiobook.

I do recommend the audiobook.

Many twists, but…

Okay, so this novel is fairly decent, and there are plenty of twists to keep you engaged. However, the first portion, which was great and my favorite part, just didn’t mesh right with the second portion. There was something missing there, or just not developed enough in terms of ending/beginning. The very end of the novel felt too quick, yet drawn out at the same time. The narration was great, and I really enjoyed the variety of perspectives.
