  • Grant Green Jr.
    Nov 30 2022

Grant Green Jr, son of legendary Jazz guitarist Grant Green, spent his musically formative years in Detroit at the height of Motown Records. His neighbors were R&B greats Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, James Jamerson, and Marvin Gaye. In addition to that influence, Jazz greats like Miles Davis were frequent visitors to his home. This wide array of early influences helped him grow into a musician with an understanding and love for all genres of music. He’s at home playing jazz, funk, R&B, or with a Jam Band. Usually, this podcast consists of additional interview material from the streaming episode of An Empty Room on Volume.com, but due to technical problems, that was not possible this week. However, the event with Shawn Mullins on November 20th will still happen. Also, we plan to record a dedicated podcast with Shawn Mullins in early 2023.

Shawn’s CDs have consistently topped the Americana and Adult Contemporary charts, and he maintains a busy worldwide touring schedule. He’s in demand as a songwriter, having written with Zac Brown, Chuck Cannon, Glen Phillips, and many others. Shawn’s latest release is a re-envisioning of Soul’s Core recorded with members of his current backup band, released for the 20th anniversary of the CD.

  • Tyrone Jackson
    Oct 30 2022

A native of New Orleans, Tyrone Jackson grew up listening to the jazz and R&B that permeates the city... but was on track to be a strictly classical musician until being persuaded to join the Jazz ensemble his freshman year at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts. While studying with Ellis Marsalis, Tyrone incorporated jazz and gospel into his musical vocabulary.

Since moving to Atlanta, he has become a highly valued member of the music community. At home in the orchestra pit, on a jazz stage, or recording studio, he also holds a seat teaching in the music department of Kennesaw College.

Tyrone’s latest CD, “From the Mind Of” lives up to its name, showcasing Tyrone’s compositional and arrangement brilliance as much as his keyboard mastery.

  • Eliot Bronson
    Oct 16 2022

While visiting a friend in Atlanta, Eliot Bronson signed up for Eddie’s Attic open mic night on a whim and won, encouraging him to move to Atlanta. After a chance meeting at a coffee house with Matthew Kahler, long-time friend, and duo partner with Shawn Mullins, put Eliot in the thick of the new folk scene that had grown from its Decatur and Little 5 Points roots into being an internationally recognized movement spearheaded by The Indigo Girls, Kristian Bush & Kristen Hall. After several self-produced records and building a solid national following, Eliot put out a CD produced by Nashville-based Dave Cobb and subsequently signed a publishing deal, moved to Nashville, and settled into the Nashville music scene. Between his co-writing sessions Eliot started writing a set of songs that turned into an album of a much more personal nature. As this project grew, he realized that this record could only be recorded by the people he loved and trusted, so he moved back to Atlanta and recorded his latest CD Empty Spaces with his long-time friends and backup band, Will Robertson, Colin Agnew, and Bret Hartley.

In the performances and interviews of An Empty Room, the goal was to remove any barrier between the viewer and the artist. This Episode of An EmptyRoom Podcast takes a different approach from the rest of the series. Somehow over decades of mutual friends, collaborators, and shared love for particular Atlantavenues Tomi Martin, Trina Meade and I had never met. A fact made even more improbable since Tomi and lived down the hall from each other in apartment buildings in Inman Park for several years in the mid1980s. As a result, this interview was more of a conversation with the three of us getting to know each other and sharing our personal paths through the Atlanta music community.

Instead of giving a standard introduction to the interview that quickly sums up their careers, as a listener you’reget to take the same journey we took as the interview unfolded, including someunexpected interruptions and the forming of new friendships.
