  • Leon Draisaitl is unstoppable, Darnell Nurse's turnaround, and booing former Oilers
    Dec 11 2024

I'm finally back in my comfort cave after a week on the road, which meant I was excited to have the time for a regularly scheduled episode of the Better Lait Than Never. This week, I recapped my trip to Toronto, spoke about The Sheet launch event, and covered all the cool things that are happening with the Oilers.

I started this week's podcast episode by recapping my trip to Toronto. While I went to the 6ix for work purposes, a big part of the story was the Sheet launch event for Jeff Marek's new show. I don't usually get invited to events like that, so experiencing it firsthand and watching the spectacle play out was incredibly interesting. More in line with expectations, however, was my continued love-hate relationship with being in Toronto. It's fun for a few days, but then it's definitely time to leave.

Turning the podcast back to the Edmonton Oilers, I started with Saturday's matchup vs. the St. Louis Blues. Obviously, Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway made their first trip back to Edmonton after signing those offer sheets, and it didn't take long for the Rogers Place faithful to let them have it. Was the booing too much? I gave my take. With those two out of the way, I got to a bunch of good news from around the Nation, as there are a bunch of our boys stepping up in a very big way to turn the season around.

Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about driving in the winter before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. As much as dumps of snow happen yearly, it's almost like people forget not to drive like heroes when it happens. The inbox was quieter this week, but I still got a healthy chuckle from your ideas and feedback. As always, I sat back and laughed while listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

  • The #NationVacation Recap Show, Oilers talk, and the 4 Nations Face Off
    Dec 4 2024

I'm back from the Denver #NationVacation, which means it's time to recap the trip and personally thank everyone who made it so special. Oh, and there's plenty of Oilers talk in there, too. This week's episode was all over the map, but I hope you enjoyed it anyway.

Kicking off this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never, I started with a thank you to everyone who made their way to Denver for the first #NationVacation of the season. Not only was the trip filled with Oilers dubs — the OT winner by Nuge was made just for me — but more importantly, some incredible people. I then spent the next few minutes complaining about how I'd be heading back to the airport in a few hours to catch a flight to Toronto for some work meetings.

Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I started with the wins over Utah and Colorado because I wanted to kick things off with some good news. Those two wins—three if you count the Rangers game—made the Oilers look much more like themselves, and their ability to fill the net was a significant factor in the result. Unfortunately, the good times didn't last long, as the winning streak ended Tuesday in Vegas with a shutout loss to the Golden Knights.

Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about the CAD/USD exchange rate before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. I love travelling, but man does it ever hurt Uncle Mastercard when it's time to pay it back. The inbox was quieter this week, but I still got a healthy chuckle from your ideas and feedback. As always, I sat back and laughed while listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

  • The Oilers' schedule is so confusing, Costco dogs, and trade rumours
    Nov 28 2024

For whatever reason, the Edmonton Oilers' schedule is so weird this season. As a result, we find ourselves in a mini bye week that isn't technically a bye week but is indeed boring us all like one. On the bright side, the lack of games meant more time for shenanigans on this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never.

I started this week's podcast by discussing my excitement for this week's #NationVacation. Heading to another city to watch the Oilers play is one of my favourite things to do, and that excitement builds even further when we're going to a place I've never been before. I then changed gears a bit to talk about seeing The Book of Mormon on Friday night at the Jubilee and how it was one of the funniest nights I've had in a long time. If you've never seen that play and are a fan of South Park, you've gotta find a way to see it at least one time.

Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, there has been little to talk about since last week because of the bizarre schedule. With only two games on the schedule this week, the Oilers' news cycle has been quiet, but that doesn't mean there weren't plenty of things to talk about. Starting with Kasperi Kapanen getting claimed off waivers, the Oilers looked to add some depth to their right side. The timing of the move couldn't have been better, however, as the club is still without Zach Hyman and Viktor Arvidsson, but no one really knows why.

Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about getting way too spicy about sports opinions before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. The inbox was quieter this week, but I still got a healthy chuckle out of your ideas and feedback. As always, I sat back and laughed while listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

  • Evan Bouchard's struggles/goal, Connor McDavid's heater, and Stuart Skinner
    Nov 21 2024

Is there anything better than a brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never to celebrate the midway point of the week? No, of course not. This week, I talked about Costco hot dog live, Connor McDavid's 1,000th point, Darnell Nurse being hurt, Kasperi Kapanen being claimed, and much more.

I kicked off this week's episode of BLTN by recapping the response to my idea about how many days I could live on nothing but Costco hot dogs before getting bored. Unsurprisingly, people had so many takes on how this bit will go that I'm getting to a spot where I almost have to do it. From there, I spent a few minutes talking about how annoying and disappointing the Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson fight was, and how the whole night was basically saved by the undercard.

Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I started the news with a conversation about Connor McDavid's 1,000th point, and how that milestone was so bananas that I need to keep talking about it. Even though we've gotten so used to McDavid's brilliance at this stage, I will never stop beating the drum of asking people to enjoy what they're watching because it's anything but normal. I also touched on the recent eastern Canadian road trip, the team claiming Kasperi Kapanen off waivers, Darnell Nurse's injury, and everything else that's going on with the team.

Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about whining on BlueSky before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. The inbox was alive with beef this week, and those back-and-forths made me laugh and laugh. If you've been listening to the podcast for any length of time, you know that I love hip hop, and beef sells records. As always, I sat back and laughed while listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

  • The Oilers are so back, and Connor McDavid closes in on 1000 points
    Nov 14 2024

Is there anything better than a brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never to celebrate the midway point of the week? No, of course not. This week, I talked about Connor McDavid being one point away from 1000, Viktor Arvidsson being banged up, my excitement for the Tyson/Paul fight, and much more.

I kicked off this week's episode of BLTN by recapping my idea about how many days I could live on nothing but Costco hot dogs. I was talking about this at my house the other day and was surprised by the lack of support I was getting for what could end up as funny content. I also discussed the feedback I've received so far for the new Better Lait Than Never logo I made this past week, and much to my surprise, many folks loved it.

Turning the podcast back to the Oilers, I started the news with another tribute to Connor McDavid, who is now only a single point away from 1000 after a four-point performance last night against the Islanders. When McDavid is at his best, there's no one more entertaining to watch in this sport, and the Islanders got a dose of what that felt like on Tuesday night. I also looked ahead at Edmonton's upcoming schedule, and with the Nashville Predators in town on Thursday, I'm banking on a big night from the Dynamic Duo.

Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about getting older before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. The inbox was alive with beef this week, and that made me laugh and laugh. If you've been listening to the podcast for any length of time, you know that I love hip hop, and beef sells records. As always, I sat back and laughed while listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

  • Connor McDavid is back with the Oilers after only missing three games
    Nov 6 2024

Is there anything better than a brand new episode of Better Lait Than Never to celebrate the midway point of the week? No, of course not. This week, I talked about Connor McDavid's super-human healing powers, the Oilers' recent roster moves, recapped the Monday night game on Prime, and much more.

Starting the podcast, how could I not talk about what happened in the US last night with the presidential election? Not that I wanted to dive into politics at all, but the reaction to the results was quite a wild dive into the human experience. Moving along quickly, I then recapped Monday's Oilers game on Amazon Prime, which was the first of four nights we'll have on the streaming platform. From the product to the experience to the presentation, I offered my take on what it was like to watch hockey differently.

Keeping with the Oilers, I kicked off the news with the stunning revelation that Connor McDavid will be back in the Oilers lineup only nine days after suffering an ankle injury on his first shift against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Given that he was supposed to be out of the lineup for 2-3 weeks, seeing him on the top line at Wednesday's morning skate was certainly a surprise. Then again, should we be surprised? If there's one thing Connor McDavid has done repeatedly in his career, it's defying the odds when it comes to his recovery time, and this ankle injury was just the latest example.

Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about off-leash dogs before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. The inbox was quiet but mighty this week, but that didn't mean you fine folks didn't still make me laugh anyway. As always, I can't help but sit back and laugh while listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

  • Connor McDavid out 2-3 weeks, and how will the Oilers survive without him?
    Oct 31 2024

The Oilers took one of their most disappointing losses in memory on Monday in Columbus, and the mood around Oil Country is back in the dumps. Is there hope? Are we doomed? Let's talk about it in this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never.

I kicked off this week's episode of BLTN with a look back on Friday's Pittsburgh Penguins game and how it was the most fun I've had an Oilers game in quite some time. Not only did I have a blast with the boys, but we even ended up at the casino together afterward in the hopes of great wins. I also spent a few minutes talking about the World Series and the insane moment that happened in last night's game when a Yankees fan tried to pull a ball out of Mookie Betts' hand.

Turning the podcast to the Oilers, I had to start with the news that Connor McDavid will be out of Edmonton's lineup for the next 2-3 weeks with an ankle injury. While that timeline isn't as bad as it could have been for our captain, the Oilers will need a bunch of players to step up in his absence. I mean, if Monday's game against the Blue Jackets is any indication of what the team will look like without their captain, then we are in a world of trouble.

Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about other fanbases cheering for injuries before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. The inbox was quieter again this week, but that didn't mean you fine folks didn't still make me laugh anyway. I certainly had a healthy chuckle listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.

  • Oilers can't score, can't close, and can't win... but it will get better
    Oct 23 2024

The Oilers racked up a pair of disappointing losses against the Stars and Hurricanes, and the mood around Oil Country is back in the sewer. Is there hope? Are we doomed? Let's talk about it in this week's episode of Better Lait Than Never.

I kicked off this week's episode of BLTN by wondering aloud how it's possible that the Oilers 2024-25 season feels nearly identical to the disastrous start from a year ago. At 2-4-1 through seven games, it's not like the Oilers are down and out or anything like that, but I'm genuinely puzzled that a team this talented can allow this slow start to happen again.

Digging into what's gone wrong, I started the news by looking at the losses against Dallas and Carolina. Both of those games were well within reach for our boys, but the lack of goal-scoring is really making it difficult for the team to gain any traction. That said, I also feel like it's a matter of time before Edmonton's luck starts to turn and pucks start going in the net, but it's been painful watching them struggle to get there.

Making matters worse, some of our former friends are finding success in new markets while their old stomping grounds continue to struggle offensively. So, even though many of us believe the Oilers will turn things around, this early part of the season has been a tough pill to swallow. As the losses continue to pile up, the fanbase keeps getting more and more restless and louder about voicing their displeasure.

Finally, I wrapped up this quick episode of BLTN with a Righteous Sack Beating about the deja-vu feelings we're all working through before wrapping up the show with another round of voicemails. The inbox was quieter again this week, but that didn't mean you fine folks didn't still make me laugh anyways. I certainly had a healthy chuckle listening to everything that's been on your mind over the last seven days.
