  • #6 - Ricki Herbert - The UNDEFEATED World Cup Coach
    Jun 28 2024

Today we welcome a true NZ legend, former All Whites and Wellington Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert to the show.

Ricki is an incredible guest, as he is what I refer to as a “triple threat” meaning she can speak from all three perspectives (being an Athlete, a Coach and a Parent) with great authority.

Ricki was an accomplished football player, competing (and winning titles) in national level competitions in both NZ and Australia before securing a big move to Wolverhampton Wanderers in the UK. He represented the NZ AllWhites over 60 times, including the 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain.

More commonly known for his coaching exploits, Ricki moved quickly through coaching NZ powerhouse Central United onto roles within the NZF setup including U17 & U23 and All White assistant roles. Taking over the top job in 2005, he qualified the team for the Confederations Cup and the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, where the team went UNDEFEATED, with three draws including against the then-current champions Italy.

Ricki also spent an additional 10 years coaching in the Australian A league with Wellington Phoenix before stints in India, Papua New Guinea and Maldives, before returning to NZ and focusing his energy on developing future generations of talents in the Waikato.

Ricki is also father to Kale, a burgeoning football coach who is forging his own path with various coaching roles with big NZ clubs.

  • #5 - Ben Stroud - The Man In The Arena
    Jun 28 2024

Ben Stroud is an athlete forging his own journey in the complex world of professional football.

After moving through the ranks of the NZ domestic scene, Ben moved into the US College pathway where he spent 4 years as a student-athlete.

He has captained a team to promotion to the Finish 2nd division and is now plying his trade at Perth SC, a perianal powerhouse of NPL football in Western Australia, where his coach is former NZ Football great, Danny Hay.

This is a really grounding conversation, where, unlike some future guests that have reached the top of their proverbial sporting mountain, Ben is still on his path and the learnings he is taking from his many different environments and support people, are helping him get one step closer.

  • #4 - Simon Greatly - How Business & Sport Assist my Role as a Sporting Parent
    Jun 28 2024

Simon Gerathy is a successful businessman in the various world of marketing & sports and someone I came to know in my earlier years at Coastal Spirit.

His oldest son Liam was a promising young footballer who made his debut for the national league team Canterbury United Dragons after spending time at one of NZs best footballing institutes, the Ole Academy.

Liam didn’t quite make the transition to a professional athlete and has since turned his passion for football into non-playing roles, namely coaching & analysis with some major clubs in Sydney, Western Sydney Wanderers and Manly United.

For me, opening up conversations with parents such as Simon, who have been right there on the difficult journey of transitioning from talented youngster to experienced pro does not occur enough.

Through taking in the observations of parents, it will only serve to help us become better coaches, administrators, athletes and also parents.

It’s time to treat parents as allies, rather than advisories.
