  • Résumé

  • Brought to you in association with Underdog Podcasts, The Art of the Podcast is a Syracuse University class taught by Seth Everett. For its final project, each student was tasked with creating and producing their own podcast. Each week we'll post a show from each of four categories. Please feel free to contact us to share your thoughts on any you believe should continue on.

  • Wish Upon Watchathon
    May 13 2024

    Hosted by: Riley Sullivan

This podcast is a produced and researched episodic style of content with a clear separation of each episode through the preparation and viewing, then subsequent re-viewing of a particular film, which is then dissected by a group of people.

The film of choice would be Wish Upon (2017). On paper, this is a fairly standard loud-noise horror flick from the folks at Blumhouse studios, but in practice, the film's ill-advised attempts to integrate “teen drama” tropes into the plot, horrible acting and restrained pg-13 violence create a perfect storm of “so bad it’s good” that is endlessly entertaining, or at least I hope. This type of movie I believe is important to make an informed choice about. If the podcast was centered on a beloved film there wouldn't be much opportunity for high emotions or comedic moments, while a plain terrible “just bad” movie would barely get enough enthusiasm to get us out of the gate and would assuredly stumble right away. All this is to say I want to watch Wish Upon (Blumhouse, 2017). I want to watch it 100 times. And I want to document my thoughts each of those times, as an experiment in the nature of human madness.

  • The Hopeless Cinematics
    May 6 2024

    Hosted By: Rebecca Podd

The Hopeless Cinematic Podcast poses the question of who knows more about the film industry than the people studying it? Who else knows every genre, every camera technique, and every defining moment in film history better than the students who have dedicated their college experience to learning them. On this show, we get the perspective of those who don’t just see a form of entertainment when they watch a movie, but see the dreams careers they hope to have and the pieces of art they aspire to create. Each episode will have students analyze and debate how the filmmakers of today are either acing their films with flying colors or barely passing the film school standard.

The first episode will center around me and two of my student colleagues and our opinions on the new Mean Girls movie. The original helped raise our generation, now here we are 20 years later and the iconic film has been repacked and presented to us again. Was the film’s 20-something-year-old target audience satisfied with the results? Does a student who is more focused on learning story development like the film more than one focused who is dedicated to cinematography? Overall, did the film’s modernization of a classic inspire us that we could do the same someday, or convince us that we could do better ourselves?
