When Waco’s gunsmith, Craig Upchurch, is denied a relocation of his business next to Curly Snipes’ blacksmith shop on the Brazos River, he takes it upon himself to punish those he believes are responsible. Since Jubal Stone as his deputies are all good friends with Snipes, Upchurch sets his sights on them. But they are not the only ones who will become victims of his devilry.

When Stanley Michael Slago rides into Waco, it looks as if he has ill intentions and is there to start trouble. He wears his gun low, which immediately garners the attention of the residents of Waco as well as the lawmen. And the stranger asks a lot of questions— ones that make him sound like a killer for hire. Soon he butts heads with Jubal and his deputies… that is until the truth comes out for his being there. This man is looking for those responsible for killing his wife and parents.

The frontier was no place to hang your hat if you were a coward or weakling, and sometimes even the strong and brave fell victim to the violence that stalked the land and plagued this new and untamed country. Such was the case with Sheriff Joe Stone and his family. Joe was a man’s man from his narrow-brimmed hat down to his tarnished iron spurs. He had a hickory spine and anvils for fists. A lawman for over twenty-five years, Joe Stone split his time as a Texas ranger and sheriff, keeping law and order in frontier towns all over the Texas territory.

Threats have been made against the life of a federal judge in Texas so he has been reassigned to the Los Angeles area. Jubal is given the task of escorting the judge by railway halfway and an Arizona marshal, who just happens to be Branson Hawk, is assigned to escort the judge for the rest of the trip. At the meeting point somewhere in far west Texas, they meet, both surprised and happy for the unplanned meeting.
