Detective Matthew Cunningham is haunted by ghosts. He spends his days skulking through Boston, lost in depression and angst. His wife loves him but cannot stand his darkness much longer. He needs to be given a direction to face and a problem to confront. And a problem does come.

In the decades leading up to the first Gulf War, modern weapons shake the air, land, and sea. Until finally, Saxüru, one of the old gods, slips through a fractured barrier and rises from the Red Sea, eager to take dominion. But war has changed over the centuries, and Saxüru is met with the dogged resistance of Joint Task Force 13 - an elite, covert unit sworn to hold fast against every evil, supernatural threat.

This extraordinary story unfolds in the dim streets of Victorian London's notorious East End. Poverty, squalor and crime fester and proliferate, blighting the lives of all who are unfortunate enough to dwell there. Yet from within the gloom, shines a beacon of light: the light of human dignity. And, sometimes, righteousness, decency and justice win out. In this dramatic play - out of the everlasting human conflict of good versus evil, various giants of their time, immortal beings, come into conflict.

Enter into a complex international scenario of espionage, intrigue, and assassination. Thrown in are a mixed bag of characters. The young visitor to the household of Sir Adrian Fettice, himself something of an enigma, his opposite number of the German Secret Service, some almost innocent bystanders, a deadly assassin, and Sherlock Holmes. A trap is set, but the outcome is not as expected. Only the quickness of mind of the greatest detective is capable of achieving the most unexpected but brilliant final result.

In a quiet town in Maine, as a winter storm rages around it, Nocturne Hall sits atop a mountain: an old-fashioned hospital that inspires both power and mystery. A young hit-and-run victim is brought in by ambulance, and the staff and patients go about another normal day. But this is not a normal day, and this is not a normal town. In the spots on the map where light does not linger, there are dark things lurking in the shadows that not even the angels in heaven or the demons in hell can comprehend. And those dark things like to play, with claws and teeth that scratch and bite.

Eduardo has lost both of his parents. In the summer of 2002, he's packed up and sent to Maine to live with his grandmother, in a small town called Nocturne. It's a far-cry from his life in New York.
