Armageddon 2419 A.D. is the first appearance of the character who would become Buck Rogers. First published in the August 1928 issue of Amazing Stories, followed by a sequel in March 1929. These two novellas would spawn a comic strip that would run for more than 40 years, a radio series, a movie serial, and a bevy of imitators.

The two original Buck Rogers novellas. Buck Rogers was a huge success, spawning many imitators such as Flash Gordon. Despite being written prior to World War II, the story line accurately foreshadowed several notable advancements in technology: bazookas, consumer e-purchasing, immersive telepresence, night vision devices, optical devices for small arms such as the red-dot sight, paratroopers, remote piloted surveillance and attack drones, telecommuting, and wireless phones - including the flip phone!

Nowlan’s novella tells about the United States in the 25th century, conquered by Hans in 2109 AD and only now beginning to rebel. Sometime after World War I, nearly all the European powers joined forces against the United States. Although the US won the war, both sides were devastated by the conflict. Taking advantage of the chaos that followed, the "Russian Soviets" (Soviet Union) joined forces with the "Mongolians" to take over Europe.

It is 2420 A.D., one year after mining engineer Anthony "Buck" Rogers awoke from nearly 500 years of suspended animation. The down-trodden Americans have their Han overlords on the run, and victory seems near. But then Rogers is captured, and the Hans try to wring out his secrets - secrets which could send the American war effort crashing to an ignominious defeat.

Mining engineer Anthony Rogers is trapped by a mine collapse and falls into a state of suspended animation due to the presence of radioactive gases. He awakens nearly five hundred years later, to a United States that has been conquered by the Chinese. Using his 20th-century military knowledge, he helps the down-trodden Americans take back their country.
