Galactic support for the Zeta colony has grown while the power and resources of The Order continues to shrink. Exposed as a dark and manipulative force, The Order's hold on planetary governments throughout the galaxy has been broken. Desperate to restore their lost power, black ops teams with secret ties to The Order begin a campaign to gain control of Zeta. Rather than a direct assault on the government of Zeta, the black ops agents target people under age 30. Some are blackmailed, others are infected with mind-controlling nanobots, and one person is bio-engineered to be their weapon.

Oen and Jarred are surprised by the arrival of not one, but two teenagers. Jeromy, who met Jarred in book three of the Paths Trilogy, loves and admires Jarred. When Jeromy's mom remarries, the young Jeromy asks to live with Oen and Jarred. Rhea is sent by Dolana to find safety with Oen and Jarred. Raised in the shadow of the brothels, Rhea is a brilliant young woman who longs for safety and the opportunity to learn from Oen, the most gifted member of the Geneer tribe. Oen and Jarred successfully help both teens complete their education and discover life partners.

Oen and Jarred are life mates: Oen is a brilliant and handsome engineer and inventor. Jarred is tall, dark, and large, a former acolyte from within The Order, trained to despise the kind of man he now loves. Together, they helped free Oen’s homeworld from domination by The Order and weaken its evil empire.

Assisted by the heir of a notorious space pirate, their probing brings them to the attention of The Order, men who will stop at nothing to prevent the secrets of Zeta from being known. Acolyte Jarred arrives to seek and destroy these friends and any evidence of the existence of Zeta. But to everyone's surprise, he has a mission of his own.

Members of three tribes are drawn by fate into the menacing Rift Valley. They come from opposing tribes yet follow individual paths that lead to love and friendship. The story opens with a tough-minded, take-action woman fleeing the brute who replaced her father as leader of the Mila Tanari tribe. She chooses to jump into the Rift, rather than be the pawn of the tribe's new leader.

Oen and Jarred help Dolana establish a new colony on Zeta, the planet selected 300 years ago to showcase the benefits of collaboration. Previous attempts to settle Zeta were thwarted by The Order, corrupt and evil religious men who craved power and control. Thanks to Oen, Jarred, and their friends, The Order is defeated and removed from power, though not destroyed. But now a new threat appears that is determined to destroy the fledgling colony. The same advanced androids sent to help build the colony suddenly turn destructive.

Alon, Shanra, and Oen find themselves in the darkest dungeon of the Preit stronghold. They share their cell with Darrik, friend and heir of a space pirate, and Jarred, a former member of The Order nursing a family grudge and a personal mission to end their evil reign. Will any of them survive to reveal the secrets of the Zeta mission? Or will The Order once again bury any hope of a world built on shared strengths?
