In 1870 in Warrensburg, Missouri, a well-known foxhound named Drum was shot during a hunting excursion. Drum’s owner sued the shooter for damages, and lawyer and skilled orator George Graham Vest made the courtroom address on behalf of the plaintiff. What followed was, not a recounting of testimonies and evidence as expected, but a historical, poetic, and philosophical ode to man’s best friend.

This story is from Waldo's perspective as he goes cross country, meeting new people, seeing new things, and the sadness he feels as his brothers and sisters all go to their new homes.

Quando si pensa alle antiche civiltà del continente americano, come quella maya o azteca, si è soliti associarle a immagini di piramidi immerse nella foresta; difficilmente si pensa a come si nutrivano. Se in genere si fatica a riconoscere l’origine americana di molti cibi della nostra tavola, come patate, mais e pomodori, ancor più difficilmente si associano questi cibi alle loro originarie forme di preparazione e alle antiche culture alimentari di cui fecero parte.
