Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns driven time and again off course, once he had plundered the hallowed heights of Troy. So begins Robert Fagles' magnificent translation of the Odyssey, which Jasper Griffin in The New York Times Review of Books hails as "a distinguished achievement." If the Iliad is the world's greatest war epic, then the Odyssey is literature's grandest evocation of everyman's journey though life.

Vor etwa 2.000 Jahren starb Ovid. Wie kaum ein anderer prägte er die abendländische Kultur. In seinen "Metamorphosen" erzählt er von der Entstehung der Welt und des Menschen. In rund 250 Verwandlungssagen führt er durch die antike Mythologie bis in die Gegenwart des antiken Lesers. Es sind mythische Geschichten von Menschen oder Halbgöttern, die zu Pflanzen, Tieren und Sternbildern werden. Seine "Metamorphosen", geschrieben in Versen und in über 15 Stunden gelesen von Burgschauspieler Peter Simonischek, sind so fantasievoll wie fantastisch und regen immer wieder zu neuen Deutungen an.

Premier recueil de poèmes d'Apollinaire, "Alcools" est publié en 1913, alors que certains poèmes du recueil ont été écrits dès 1902. Apollinaire y mêle différents motifs comme la souffrance amoureuse, la mélancolie et le passage du temps, la ville moderne, ou encore le quotidien dans son exploration des paysages rhénans.

Lord Byron and Percy Shelley challenged their friends to see who could come up with the most horrifying story imaginable. Mary Shelley did, terrifying them all with her nightmare-inspired tale. It is followed by "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" by Coleridge which was an early haunting influence on the young Mary Shelley.

The tragic poem, dominated by the themes of lust, crime, and revenge, tells the story of soldiers Tarquin and Collatine, and Collatine's wife Lucrece. It is believed to have been written in 1594. It is set just prior to the establishment of the Roman Republic. It is a poem with some similarity to Shakespeare's tragic revenge play, Titus Andronicus, and features aspects of other great Shakespearian works.

The Trojan War is over, and Odysseus, the cunning king of Ithaca, sets out for home, his wife Penelope, and his son Telemachus. It proves a long, 10-year journey, fraught with dangers, from Polyphemus, the one-eyed Cyclops, and the seductive Sirens, to the love of Calypso on her all-too-comfortable isle.

Le Metamorfosi descrivono molte trasformazioni di persone in alberi, bestie, pietre o stelle (o viceversa), ma operano loro stesse una metamorfosi più attraente: quella dei miti greci in piccole novelle fantastiche, con personaggi vivi e svariati per temperamento, raziocinio ed emotività. Nemmeno il successivo appannarsi del prestigio di Ovidio ha mai esaurito la lista dei riverberi letterari delle Metamorfosi, fino a ieri – probabilmente fino a domani.

Scritta da Virgilio tra il 29 e il 19 A. C., nei primi anni del regno di Augusto, l'Eneide chiude il ciclo epico degli eroi iniziato da Omero con l'Iliade e l'Odissea. Fu proprio l'imperatore Augusto, il committente dell'opera, a salvarla dalle fiamme, come Virgilio aveva disposto nel suo testamento. Il più importante poema di tutta la latinità narra l'avventuroso arrivo nel Lazio di Enea e dei pochi superstiti dalla distruzione di Troia, ai quali gli dèi hanno affidato il compito di fondare una nuova patria.

Primo capolavoro della letteratura occidentale, scritto probabilmente intorno all'VIII secolo a.C., l'Iliade è, insieme con l'Odissea, uno dei pilastri di tutta la cultura occidentale. Nel poema si narrano i 51 giorni della guerra di Troia, dall'ira di Achille ai funerali di Ettore, densi di battaglie ed imprese nelle quali si intrecciano continuamente i destini di dèi ed eroi.

L’Eneide non è un semplice poema epico ma il quadro di un passaggio fra il vecchio mondo pagano e il nuovo mondo cristiano (nondimentichiamoci infatti che Virgilio è stato la guida di Dante nella Commedia). Solo un poeta dalla ricca vita interiore come Virgilio, e dal potere evocativo dei suoi versi poteva farsi l’interprete di questo passaggio.
