By the mid-17th century, the existence of a land in the south referred to as Terra Australis was generally known and understood by the Europeans, and incrementally, its shores were observed and mapped. Van Diemen’s Land, an island off the south coast of Australia now called Tasmania, was identified in 1642 by Dutch mariner Abel Tasman, and a few months later, the intrepid Dutchman would add New Zealand to the map of the known world.

William Stukeley's study of Stonehenge from 1740 is a classic in the field. Stukeley, a fellow of the Royal Society, was a conservationist who complained about the way Stonehenge was treated by landowners and tourists. The book includes his accurate drawings that are still being used by scholars today.

Accounts of the Second World War usually involve tales of bravery in battle, or stoicism on the home front, as the British public stood together against Fascism. The joint British and US campaigns in the European theater of operations during World War II rank among the most impressive examples of coalition warfare in history. Some historians have called the Seven Years’ War the first true world war, and they make a good point. William the First, who was also called William the Conqueror, and in some cases, William the Bastard, was the first Norman emperor of England, ruling from 1066 till his death in 1087. Around this time, many wars and battles were waged over the kingdom and distribution of territories in Europe. France, the Anglo-Saxons, and Scandinavian troops were engaged in raids, struggles, and battles to claim their lands and gains.
