American Imperialism is a short work in which Schurz denounced the Spanish-American war and the United States’ acquisition of the Philippines, Cuba, and Puerto Rico. The 16th and 17th centuries saw the emergence of a new threat to government and organized society. This is an excellent introduction to the history of this often misunderstood time. Although it is a story written in broad strokes, of an extremely complicated period, particularly in the development of Britain, the author has peppered it with some fascinating details of the people and the events of the time.

The English and French already had conflicts elsewhere, and the Napoleonic Wars greatly contributed to these.
