Did you know that the second-largest battle of the Civil War in terms of casualties took place near a small creek in Georgia whose native name means “River of Death”? The Battle of Chickamauga claimed more casualties (dead, wounded, captured, and missing) than any other Civil War battle except Gettysburg, yet it is not well known. Chickamauga did not change the tide of the war. Though it was a Union defeat, it did not really slow down Union plans for the collapse of the Confederacy in the Deep South.

The Gilded Age was a period in American history that covered the late 19th century, from the 1870s till around 1900. The Gilded Age was a period of great financial development in the United States, specifically in the North and West. The time saw an increase of countless European immigrants, as American incomes were considerably higher than those in Europe, specifically for experienced workers, while industrialization demanded an ever-increasing labor force. The Gilded Age was also a time of severe poverty and inequality.

"If the people raise a howl against my barbarity and cruelty, I will answer that war is war, and not popularity-seeking. If they want peace, they and their relatives must stop the war." These are the words of General William T. Sherman, with whom "scorched earth policy" will forever be linked. In his memoirs, the Union general describes the waning days of the American Civil War and his famous march through Georgia, culminating in the capture and burning of Atlanta. With frank, forceful words, the listener is brought to the front lines as Sherman wipes out 20,000 Confederate soldiers and sacks Atlanta - and in the process boosts Abraham Lincoln's re-election campaign.

Nothing in American history has ever equaled the death and destruction of the intense and bloody warfare of 1861-1865 between Americans. For later generations, such a horror must have the comfort of a moral justification. The war must have been a noble and necessary crusade carried out against evil people who refused to give up their slaves. But is this true? Even before the first rumblings of secession shook the halls of Congress, British involvement in the coming schism was inevitable.
