The 1925 New York edition of Ernest Hemingway’s In Our Time trails readers through the years before, during, and after World War I. The collection’s first two stories, “Indian Camp” and “The Doctor and the Doctor’s Wife,” introduce Hemingway’s semiautobiographical character Nick Adams as a child. In total, seven stories portray the young man’s coming of age. All fourteen, including interspersed vignettes, embody the themes that Hemingway would return to throughout his career: alienation, grief, loss, and separation, as well as the regenerative powers of nature.

Virgil's Georgics ranks as one of the most precious pastoral poems ever written, and it has served as a model for its type ever since. Georgics means "of or relating to agriculture or rural life" and it comes from the Greek word, "georgicus". Virgil's main theme in this, his second great work after The Eclogues, was the importance of peace both in the spiritual and physical sense.

The Greek poet, Hesiod, stands out as the first personality in European literature. Hesiod's poetry is the oldest source of the myths of Prometheus, Pandora, and the Golden Age.

England has produced many wonderful poets. Samuel Taylor Coleridge is safe amongst their number. As well as a poet he was also known for his skills as a critic and philosopher. With his great friend William Wordsworth they began what is now seen as the Romantic Movement. Contributing such great works as 'Rime Of The Ancient Mariner', 'Kubla Kahn' and his opus Biographia Literatia to the English language ensures his place in our history.

The finest classic account comes from Apollonius of Rhodes, the Greek poet of the 3rd century BCE and librarian at Alexandria. Though less well-known than Homer's Iliad and Odyssey, and much shorter, it is an epic poem which is both exciting and moving, with remarkably vivid portraits of the main characters, Jason and Medea.
