Les contes fantastiques de Guy de Maupassant (1850-1893) comptent parmi les meilleures du genre en littérature française. Cet extrait de "La Peur" (seconde version) dans lequel l’auteur parle du romancier russe Tourgueniev, s’appliquerait parfaitement à lui-même : "Avec lui, on la sent bien, la peur vague de l’Invisible, la peur de l’inconnu qui est derrière le mur, derrière la porte, derrière la vie apparente. "Red Nails" is the last of the stories about Conan the Cimmerian written by American author Robert E. Howard. A novella, it was originally serialized in "Weird Tales" magazine from July to October 1936. It is set in the pseudo historical Hyborian Age and concerns Conan encountering a lost city in which the degenerate inhabitants are proactively resigned to their own destruction. Due to its grim themes of decay and death, the story is considered a classic of Conan lore and is often cited by Howard scholars as one of his best tales.

The Marriage of Heaven and Hell by the English poet William Blake consists of a series of texts written in the style of biblical prophecy but expressing Blake's own beliefs. Composed between 1790 and 1793, the book makes reference to Milton and Swedenborg, and adopts a device from Dante's Divine Comedy and Milton's Paradise Lost: a visit to hell. Blake expresses a deliberately depolarized and unified vision of the cosmos in which the material world and physical desire are both part of the divine order.
