January 1832. After enjoying a delightful few weeks with her family, expectant mother Kiera and Sebastian Gage have been invited to the Duchess of Bowmont's Twelfth Night party in Traquair, Scotland. Though she normally avoids such fashionable, rambunctious events, Kiera is ready to join in the festive merrymaking. But upon their arrival at the opulent estate, it becomes obvious that all is not merry in their hostess's home. The family appears to be under a great strain, and someone seems determined to cause mayhem among the guests with a series of forged notes.

While on a bus tour on the Scottish moors in the mid-1990s, amateur sleuths John and Sara Todd overhear what sounds like a plot to murder. In a castle hotel, they wake to a scuffle in the hallway. When a body is found in the pond the next morning, Scotland Yard and the local constabulary are called in. John and Sara, with their traveling friends the Slaters and Arthurs, form the "Committee", and they are on the case! Using all their wits, unique personalities, and talents, they stay one step ahead of the detectives and close in on the murderer, placing themselves at risk.

Dorothy Martin and her husband, retired Chief Constable Alan Nesbitt, go on a trip to Orkney in Scotland to visit an old friend and see some intriguing Stone Age excavations. They realize there’s considerable dissension between the archaeologists and the principal donor for the newest dig, a wealthy and abrasive American. When a more recent corpse is found at the dig, various suspects are named, but there’s not enough evidence to bring a case against anyone.
