Arrêté en octobre 1943 comme résistant, Sylvain Vergara, âgé de 18 ans, est emprisonné à Fresne, torturé puis déporté Nacht und Nebel en février 1944. Il est l’un des plus jeunes internés non-juifs de Buchenwald dont il devait être libéré le 11 avril 1945. Marqué à vie par cette épreuve, il n’a rien écrit d’autre que ce témoignage, rédigé au tout début des années 1960 alors qu’il désespérait de faire entendre sa voix.
