Greek Philosophy

In these aphorisms, the philosopher reflects on our mortality and the knowledge that we will suffer in this life. However, each of us has the choice to endure with dignity those setbacks that we cannot control, he contends. Acceptance is core in Stoic doctrine.

 The Meditations is a series of personal writings by Marcus Aurelius, Roman emperor from 161 to 180 AD, which records his private notes to himself and his ideas on Stoic philosophy. A major theme of Meditations is the importance of analyzing one's judgment of self and others and the development of a cosmic perspective. 

The Enchiridion is a collection of the most profound teachings of Epictetus (c. AD 55-135), who taught that philosophy is a way of life and not just a matter of theory. The Enchiridion is a canonical text of Stoic philosophy and contains all the fundamentals. Among them is the principle of not being concerned with that which is out of one’s control. Misfortune should not disturb the individual at all and should not be perceived negatively.  

To Epictetus, all external events are beyond our control, and we should calmly accept whatever happens. However, individuals are responsible for their own actions, which they can examine and control through self-discipline.

Life in Ancient Greece and Rome was tough. Violent wars and terrible diseases were much more common. And yet, some philosophers - and even one emperor - have found a way to stay resilient and reasonably happy in those hard, unpredictable times! Their ideas, known as Stoicism, have stood the test of time. And they'll make you stronger and wiser than most modern-day popular psychology.

Gehörte der "Menon" in der Antike zu einem der viel gelesenen und ausgedeuteten Dialoge Platons, zählt er heute eher zu den weniger bekannten Dialogen. Dabei enthält er viele wesentliche Aussagen Platons zu Erkenntnistheorie, Heuristik, Ethik und Seinslehre. Im "Menon" veranschaulicht uns Platon, wie all diese Bereiche, die heute gern getrennt voneinander gelehrt und erforscht werden, bei ihm noch unzertrennbar zusammengehören. Paraphrasierend könnte man mit Platons "Menon" sagen: "Ja, Tugend ist lehrbar.

Socrates, perhaps the most famous philosopher of the ancient world, left no writings. The method of philosophical investigation for which he is celebrated has come down to us in the form of dialogues, composed by his student, Plato. The four dialogues in this collection are known by the names of the chief characters in each: Lysis, Charmides, Laches, and Euthyphro. As they fall into a more or less natural group due to the fact that each one deals with a single ethical abstract—friendship, temperance, courage, and piety, respectively—they have been renamed based on their subjects.

I have worked to make his Meditations as understandable as possible. By the end of the book, the emperor’s philosophy will be crystal clear. En Apología de Sócrates, diálogo compuesto entre 393 y 389 a. C., Platón (c. 427 - 347 a. C.) da una versión de la defensa del mismo Sócrates tras ser acusado de corromper a los jóvenes y despreciar a los dioses.

San Severino Manlio Boezio (475 - 525) è stato un filosofo romano, venerato dalla Chiesa Romana come santo e martire. Le sue opere influenzarono notevolmente la filosofia cristiana del Medioevo, tanto che alcuni lo collocano tra i fondatori della Scolastica, per quanto l'opera si fondi sulle tradizioni stoiche e soprattutto neoplatoniche. Accusato, forse falsamente di aver voluto restaurare la libertà di Roma, nel settembre del 524 viene incarcerato a Pavia qui scrive il De consolatione philosophiae.

Nei momenti di crisi e trasformazione come quello che stiamo vivendo, la filosofia può aiutarci a rispondere alle domande più urgenti. Dobbiamo solo interrogarla. Publicada en 1940 y considerada una obra maestra, La vida privada y pública de Sócrates consagró a René Kraus como biógrafo de excepción. René Kraus realiza impagables descripciones del filósofo, de algunos de sus célebres contemporáneos y del ambiente de la ciudad y la época, subrayando la tesis que subyace en esta obra: que los seres excepcionales, incluso cuando son incomprendidos y maltratados en vida, terminan imponiendo su elevado ejemplo moral y proporcionan a la humanidad un horizonte de civilización.

O Manual de Epicteto, também conhecido por Encheirídion, é um curto guia com conselhos éticos estoicos compilado por Flávio Arriano, aluno de Epicteto. Encheirídion consiste em um conjunto de aforismos que o filósofo deve ter sempre à mão, para ajudá-lo a enfrentar e vencer as dificuldades da vida: para lembra-lo, conforme ensinava Epicteto, que não devemos considerar como nossas aquelas coisas que não estão sob o nosso controle, mas devemos, sim, concentrar nossos esforços naquilo que está sob o nosso controle.

Critias o De La Atlántida es uno de los últimos diálogos de Platón. Parece ser una continuación de La República y el Timeo, es de carácter inconcluso y su contenido describe la guerra entre la Atenas prehelénica y la Atlántida, hipotético imperio occidental e isla misteriosa descrita por el sofista Critias. Éste sostiene que la Atlántida existió en una época muy remota, y la sitúa «más allá de las columnas de Heracles». Dicha isla mitológica fue tragada por el mar y se perdió para siempre.
