Age of Discovery explores a world on the brink of a new Renaissance and asks: how do we share more widely the benefits of unprecedented progress? How do we endure the inevitable tumult generated by accelerating change? How do we each thrive through this tangled, uncertain time? From gains in health, education, wealth and technology to crises of conflict, disease and mass migration, the similarities between today's world and that of the 15th century are both striking and prophetic: we have been here before.

The Basques live in a modestly small, triangular-shaped country that straddles the farthest northeastern portion of Spain and the southeastern portion of France. While some live outside this area today, many still call this region home. These hardy people have dwelt in the foothills of the jagged Pyrenees Mountains since prehistoric times, and they’re still there to this day.

More than eight centuries after his death, Saladin's life and reign represent the pinnacle of the Arab world's glory. Douglas Mawson, born in 1882 and knighted in 1914, was Australia’s greatest Antarctic explorer. After tragedy struck, Mawson found himself all alone, 160 miles from safety, with next to no food.
