Nació el 3 de diciembre de 1857 en Berdichev, Polonia (hoy Ucrania). Hijo de un noble, Apolo Nalecz Korzeniowski, patriota fervoroso, fue uno de los organizadores del comité que lideró la insurrección polaca en contra de los rusos. Con 16 años se instala en Marsella. Durante cuatro años navegó en barcos mercantes franceses, luchó en España durante las Guerras Carlistas y estuvo al borde del suicidio. Obtuvo la nacionalidad británica en 1886 y cambió su nombre.
