Modern Philosophy

This book is an exploration of original, critical, and creative thinking through the lens of my creative philosophy. It delves into the very essence of what it means to be human and provides a rational, abstract, and methodical examination of reality. Philosophy, the love of wisdom, is the guiding principle behind this journey of reflection, self-expression, and enlightenment. "The Joyful Wisdom", written in 1882, just before "Zarathustra", is rightly judged to be one of Nietzsche's best books. Here the essentially grave and masculine face of the poet-philosopher is seen to light up and suddenly break into a delightful smile. The warmth and kindness that beam from his features will astonish those hasty psychologists who have never divined that behind the destroyer is the creator, and behind the blasphemer the lover of life.

Das 19. Jahrhundert revolutioniert die Philosophie! Während aus der Industrialisierung die bürgerliche Gesellschaft hervorgeht, verlieren die Philosophen den Boden unter den Füßen. In the winelands of 16th-century Germany, Obsopoeus witnessed the birth of a poisonous new culture of bingeing, hazing, peer pressure, and competitive drinking. Alarmed, and inspired by the Roman poet Ovid's Art of Love, he wrote The Art of Drinking (1536), a how-to manual for drinking with pleasure and discrimination. In How to Drink, Michael Fontaine offers the first proper English translation of Obsopoeus' text, rendering his poetry into spirited, contemporary prose and uncorking a forgotten classic that will appeal to drinkers of all kinds and (legal) ages.

Most of us experience the world through competing perspectives. A job or a religion seems important and fulfilling when looked at in one way; but from a different angle they seem tedious or ridiculous. A friend is obtuse from one point of view, wise from another. Continuing to hold both views at once can be unsettling, highlighting conflicts between our own judgments and values, and undermining our ability to live purposefully and effectively. Yet, as Jennifer Church argues in this book, inner conflict can be a good thing.

O fac cu gândul că, astfel "însemnată", viaţa mea ar putea fi folosită ca unitate de măsură. Veţi afla, astfel, doamnelor şi domnilor, dacă viaţa voastră e mai frumoasă sau mai urâtă decât a mea.

Sie dokumentiert den Übergang des Philosophen Steiner zum Mystiker und Esoteriker und steht somit im Brennpunkt aktueller Forschungskontroversen, etwa um die Kontinuität von Steiners intellektueller Entwicklung, um die "Christlichkeit" der Anthroposophie oder um die Abhängigkeit Steiners von der anglo-indischen Theosophie.

This volume explores the metaphysics of Alexander Gottlieb Baumgarten (1714-1762) and its decisive influence on Immanuel Kant. For over a century, scholars have recognized the significance of Baumgarten's Metaphysics, both because of its impact on Kant's intellectual development and because of the way it fundamentally informed the work of generations of German philosophers, including Moses Mendelssohn, Thomas Abbt, Johann Gottfried Herder, Solomon Maimon, Johann August Eberhard, and arguably even Georg Friedrich Hegel.
