In the winter of 1952, New England was battered by the most brutal nor’easter in years. Early in 1968, a nuclear-armed Soviet submarine sank in the waters off Hawaii, hundreds of miles closer to American shores than it should have been. Compelling evidence strongly suggests that the sub sank while attempting to fire a nuclear missile.

After Tripoli declared war on the United States in 1801, Barbary pirates captured 300 U.S. sailors and marines. When she first went to sea in April of 1961, the US nuclear submarine Thresher was the most advanced submarine at sea, built specifically to hunt and kill Soviet submarines.
