Insurgent Truth argues for seeing Manning's example differently: as an act of what the book terms "outsider truth-telling." Late on the evening of October 16, 1859, John Brown and his band of 18 raiders descended on Harpers Ferry at the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers.
