The seeds of the Cold War were sown toward the end of World War II. During the war, the US and the Soviet Union were reluctant partners. On June 22, 1941, Nazi Germany launched Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of the Soviet Union. Stalin, recalling the presence of foreign troops during the Russian Revolution, balked at the suggestion of foreign soldiers on Soviet soil.
