Publisher's Summary

From multi-award winner Whoopi Goldberg comes a new and unique memoir of her family and their influence on her early life.

If it weren’t for Emma Johnson, Caryn Johnson would have never become Whoopi Goldberg. Emma gave her children the loving care and wisdom they needed to succeed in life, always encouraging them to be true to themselves. When Whoopi lost her mother in 2010—and then her older brother, Clyde, five years later—she felt deeply alone; the only people who truly knew her were gone.

Emma raised her children not just to survive, but to thrive. In this intimate and heartfelt memoir, Whoopi shares many of the deeply personal stories of their lives together for the first time. Growing up in the projects in New York City, there were trips to Coney Island, the Ice Capades, and museums, and every Christmas was a magical experience. To this day, she doesn’t know how her mother was able to give them such an enriching childhood, despite the struggles they faced—and it wasn’t until she was well into adulthood that Whoopi learned just how traumatic some of those struggles were.

Fans of personal memoirs such as Finding Me by Viola Davis and In Pieces by Sally Field will be touched by Bits and Pieces: a moving tribute from a daughter to her mother, and a beautiful portrait of three people who loved each other deeply. Whoopi writes, “Not everybody gets to walk this earth with folks who let you be exactly who you are and who give you the confidence to become exactly who you want to be. So, I thought I’d share mine with you.”

Honest

Thoroughly enjoyed getting to know a bit more of Whoopi Goldberg and who helped to mold her. Highly recommend this book. I have the hard copy as well, but I loved hearing it through her.

Hank you my friend.

I’ve always had an affinity to Whoopi Goldberg. I’ve always felt that she had the courage to dance to her own drum. This book I get a keener insight to what makes Whoopie, well, Whoopie. I love her stories. I love that she celebrates the life of her mother and her brother with who she is. After listening to this book,I feel that she and I are now friends.

Your mom was amazing!

Whoopi, I have always been a fan of yours since I was little girl! Ghost and color purple was my favourites! And then of course sister act!
Whoopi, your story touched me, I lost my mom in 2017 very suddenly, and it feels like my life was destroyed… your story about your grief I can totally relate. Thank you for being vulnerable!

Fantastic

Woopie, if I may call you that.

What an outstanding tribute to your mom. I laughed out loud, cried and clapped with each achievement.

it was easy to tell when you went off script as a memory snuck up on you it added more character to the book.

The thing I would have liked more stories about your brother Clyde. I would have loved to hear about your years on Star Trek with Sir Patrick Stewart.

Well written and a thoughtful book. Look forward to a fall up book.

Happy Listening Everyone

A Tribute to Family

Whoopi reading this book just adds to the story of her family.

Whoopi talks about the strength, resilience and love received by her mother. It shows the influence her mother was in making Whoopi the person she is.

Whoopi tells these stories about the love and support her mother and brother were for her. I laughed so hard when she tells of introducing them to Marlon Brando. It was hysterical.

Whoopi grew up in a time that having her big brother to hang out with was a very special gift for them both.

I highly recommend this funny, thoughtful, heartfelt and thought provoking book.

I loved listening to her read her stories. I don't think the book would have been the same with someone else's voice.
