Publisher's Summary

From "a new master storyteller" comes the beginning of an epic fantasy saga of blood, honor, and destiny....

The Sixth Order wields the sword of justice and smites the enemies of the Faith and the Realm. Vaelin Al Sorna was only a child of 10 when his father left him at the iron gate of the Sixth Order. The Brothers of the Sixth Order are devoted to battle, and Vaelin will be trained and hardened to the austere, celibate, and dangerous life of a Warrior of the Faith. He has no family now save the Order.

Vaelin’s father was Battle Lord to King Janus, ruler of the unified realm. Vaelin’s rage at being deprived of his birthright and dropped at the doorstep of the Sixth Order like a foundling knows no bounds. He cherishes the memory of his mother, and what he will come to learn of her at the Order will confound him. His father, too, has motives that Vaelin will come to understand. But one truth overpowers all the rest: Vaelin Al Sorna is destined for a future he has yet to comprehend. A future that will alter not only the realm, but the world.

What the critics say

“Ryan is a new fantasy author destined to make his mark on the genre. His debut novel, Blood Song, certainly has it all: great coming-of-age tale, compelling character and a fast-paced plot. If his first book is any indication of things to come, then all fantasy readers should rejoice.” (Michael J. Sullivan, author of the Riyria Revelations series)

“Fans of broadscale epic fantasy along the lines of Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series and George R. R. Martin’s Song of Ice and Fire novels should find this debut much to their liking.” (Library Journal)

“Ryan hits all the high notes of epic fantasy - a gritty setting, ancient magics, ruthless intrigue, divided loyalties and bloody action.... [A] promising debut." (Publishers Weekly)

Excellent book but has a few long parts

Great book, well read and has a good pace to it. A few part are a little slower but all in in if you like Branden Sanderson, Robert Jordan, Robin Hobb... you will love this book!

pretty good. enjoying it thoroughly.

I would ignore the reviews discouraging this audiobooks narration. his voice is perfectly fine. and nothing takes from it. I almost chose not to get this audiobook due to it. the story is quite good. I am enjoying it slightly more than the name of the wind in certain aspects.

Pleasantly surprised

It starts off like it’ll be kind of stock fantasy, a child gets sent to an order for training to become a warrior of a faith. It gradually becomes more interesting and throws curve balls often enough that it keeps you guessing. Ended up being great and satisfying.

The narrator was pretty good but not as good as other productions. Decent at inflection and not being monotone but at times it’s hard to tell the characters apart when he doesn’t give them different accents.

amazing story

I've listened to this book several times over and love it more each time. I wish the narrator would differentiate the characters more than he does but he's very solid.

Among the best books I have ever read.

If I had read the summary alone and not read the reviews from previous listeners I may have passed on this book.

The summary makes it sound like the book is about a "Gemmel-esque" invincible blood spilling warrior. A sort of stereotypical fantasy hero. This is not the case and there is far more to the character of Vaelin than his prowess in battle and far more to this book than epic battles and heroic feats.

This book is not a stereotypical fantasy novel and the writing is brilliant, at times blurring the lines between fiction writing and prose, without becoming a dream-like ethereal account of events in the way of Gene Wolfe, instead it remains grounded and refined.

I am looking forward to the next books and more from this author.
